Re: Knife Attack in Las Palmas / Cannary Islands

It often gets lost in the telling but the murderer in the Meredith Kercher case was an Ivorian burglar (Rudy Guede), who was convicted for it. The investigating magistrate got it in his head that Amanda Knox was involved, but there was no physical evidence to support that. They offered Guede a reduced punishment for testifying against Knox, which he gladly provided. So Amanda Knox spent 4 years in jail trying to prove her innocence. Rudy Guede, who committed a brutal murder by knife of a young college student, is now doing community service. It is not just the U.S.justice system that has issues... And when there are large numbers of illegal immigrants who can't find employment (not generally the case in the U.S.), and who are alien to the dominant culture, it shouldn't be surprising that some turn to crime.

Crime rates have been falling, that's for all sorts of crime, and you don't have to rely on government statistics alone. There are general surveys of whether people have been affected by crime that also show decreases in all crime, especially violent crime. But sure, there are desperate people out there and no reason to be complacent. Just don't be alarmist either!

General crime like burglary etc is way down because everyone's been at home for the last 18mths, however...

In the same period in 2021, the entirety of which was spent in lockdown, 27 people were killed in knife attacks in the capital. This means that of the 4,432 victims of knife crime in the first four months of 2020, 0.5 per cent were fatal, while 0.8 per cent of the 3,183 victims of knife crime in the first four months of 2021 were killed.

While one numbers gone down, the efficiency has gone up.

Two points:
  1. It is not just "alarmist" to make these anecdotal claims, it is xenophobic and racist. We've heard a ton of these claims in the US as well, "they are not sending us their best, they are rapists and criminals". Especially when facts are not given, just claims about all these "foreigners who come here and rape and murder". What numbers that are available in the US indicate that immigrants are less likely to engage in crime than non immigrants.
  2. But the world over there seems to be a lack of police response to crimes against persons and property. My feeling is that municipalities and federal governments are starved for police funding, mostly because the wealthy are not paying enough taxes, and conservatives want to take funds away from social services instead of setting tax levels sufficient to govern and protect our societies.

We need to stop pointing the finger at "the others" and we need to fund our police to the level needed to protect our citizens.

If you are afraid to go somewhere because of "scary people", by all means stay home. We won't miss you.

It's not scary people they are afraid of, it's the brown and black ones that they just don't like.

We have plenty of problems trying to moderate just in English, that's why we have moderator around the world, so we can catch people trying to insult each other and make political commentary that would not mean anything to somebody in the US instead of Australia.

We are not going to moderate using Google translate.
