Re: charts for openCPN for Greece, Saronic, Aegean regions

Just look at o-charts.org, the chart outlet of OpenCPN for OpenCPN.

You will find ENCs for Greece and Turkish waters, Malta, Italy, Croatia and even Egypt, in case you want to visit the Red Sea. Plus a lot more.

All charts are licensed from the corresponding Hydrographical Offices and are identical in content with "Official Charts". This implies as well that some smaller marina might not been covered in a scale one would like to see.

Re: charts for openCPN for Greece, Saronic, Aegean regions

Thank you. As I am new to the electronic charting world, I still do not understand the difference between RNC and ENC completely. I realize that RNC is raster navigational chart and ENC is eelectronic navigational chart but do not understand the implications. The site o-charts.org then has the categories, oeSENC, oeRENC.

Re: charts for openCPN for Greece, Saronic, Aegean regions

As the name says RNCs are "rasterized" paper charts, a digital photo if you like so. Georeferenced, in order to be able to plot a course and navigate or to plan a voyage.

Vector charts are composed of hundreds of geo-referenced objects like buoys, a shore line or depths. The plotter program - OpenCPN in our case - does search for the objects that are on the display for a given view port (scale, location) and presents the objects as a chart image on the screen.
The content of the charts displayed can be tailored to individual needs of the user. For example to avoid an overcrowded chart.
There is not the experienced editor of the chart who will draw the selected information as it happened with paper and raster charts. Up to the user - and the plotter program - to draw a view that makes sense for the purpose.

If you have no or little experience with vector charts, then take your time, read the corresponding parts of the manual, get the NOAA Chart Nš1 and play with the settings.

In OpenCPN you can create even your own templates of different chart views.
Then there is split screen to compare different views or charts.

Again, take your time, experiment before you sail.

Keep in mind that USA and Canada are well into their process if DIScontinuing raster charts.

So best to get familiar with ENC!
