Greece in early September - Saronic or Cyclades?

Hi all - long time lurker, first time poster. We're doing a one week bareboat catamaran charter out of Lavrion in early September. Looking at itineraries and trying to decide between the Saronic vs. Cyclades and I can't seem to find a good answer on what the conditions are like in early September, particularly whether meltemi is still a factor. We have 4 couples - the guys have done many sailing trips and are up for longer sails etc, but the wives prefer smoother and "less exciting" sailing conditions. While part of the decision is what type of scenery etc. we want, has anyone had experience in the area that time of year and how would you balance the potentially longer sail from Lavrion to the Saronic the first/last days of the trip (presumably with calmer conditions thereafter) with the risk of more exposed/open sailing to get through the northern Cyclades? We're after a mix of experiences - the wives will want to get off the boat to see some of the various towns and have dinners, etc. Thank you!!

I have no affiliation with the people at the link other than I like the information.

Meltemi is an issue early September!

For a less bumpy sail, look for protection and small fetch from N and NW

Re: Greece in early September - Saronic or Cyclades?

Hi , I have been sailing these waters for some time.
Both areas are well worth cruising.
Wind is a major factor. Predominantly from the North the Cycladies can be very windy. The secret if you are limited by time is not to go to far South and then have to fight your way back to Lavrio.
Many of the harbours in the islands are smallish and so mooring to a quay in a cat can be problematic.
From Lavrio you can easily make Poros in a day. You won’t be dissapointed.
From there cruise round towards Navpolon. Again you won’t be dissapointed and there are numerous harbours and ports on the way.
Your charter boat should provide Rod Heikels cruising guide which will be very helpful which ever area you choose.
Bon Voyage.
