Can't display both US and Canadian charts at the same time

I sail on Lake Erie. Started using OpenCPN last year; I think it's an excellent program.

Last year I purchased the Canadian charts for Lake Erie as well as downloading the NOAA RNC charts for the US side. In version 4.6.8 I used last year there was no issue in displaying both countries charts. After upgrading to version 5.0.0+9065270 I can display the Canadian charts but not the US.

Where's the magic button to show me both?

BTW - I went to OPenCPN's website for both downloads.

Thanks,
Alec

Red Dog....

We need lots more information.

Some screen shots would be useful.
Are the NOAA charts installed, and do the blue buttons at the bottom of the screen reflect the installed NOAA charts?

Thanks
Dave

Dave,

I'm having problems finding my screen shot after I save it. However, to move on; yes, the NOAA charts are loaded. I can only three blue buttons at a time - regardless of zoom level - and they are only for the Canadian charts.

Red Dog

Please publish your log-file here. That will help us see what's going on.

Press the button with a "?" (About OpenCPN), in the main menu to the left. There you will find links to the log-file. Please attach it to a post on this forum.

Thomas,

What file type or method do you want me to use? I keep coming up against file size limits or invalid file type if I try to use a ZIP file.

IIRC, screenshots get "saved" to the clipboard. You have to paste it "somewhere" to be able to "retrieve" it.

Alec
Use whatever you have but ad a .pdf at the end.
MyFile.zip.pdf for example.

Re: Can't display both US and Canadian charts at the same time

Looking through your log, you have changed your chart directories a couple of times. At one stage you had your US charts in "C:\Users\qwerty\Documents\Charts\ENC\US_REGION24" , for example.
What is the content of "D:\My Documents\Sailing\Charts\RNC\US_REGION24"?

Double check where you have your charts!

Make sure that these directories are listed in "Options->Charts->Chart Files->Directories".

Re: Can't display both US and Canadian charts at the same time

Thomas,

As far as the US ENC charts go, I was playing with them as a "let's see what these are all about." Those files and directory location have been removed from OpenCPN and deleted from the computer.

Currently the directory paths listed under chart files (Options->Charts->Chart Files->Directories) are:

- D:\My Documents\Sailing\Charts

- D:\My Documents\Sailing\Charts\BSBCHART (The Canadian RNC Lake Erie charts manually installed)

- D:\My Documents\Sailing\Charts\RNC|US_REGION24 ( US RNC Lake Eire charts downloaded and installed through OpenCPN's Chart Downloader.

These directory paths are also shown in "Options->Charts->Chart Groups".

Please attach the opencpn.ini as well.

What is the content of D:\My Documents\Sailing\Charts\RNC|US_REGION24, if you check it manually?

Re: Can't display both US and Canadian charts at the same time

Thomas,

Life is good.

Between your questions prompting me to muck about on my own I can once again see both the US and Canadian charts.

Now, it's a matter of how long the travel restrictions between the two countries last as to whether the Canadian side will available to me this summer.

Thank you, good sir, for your help

RedDog...

So, how about a post-mortem? What exactly was wrong, and how can you advise/help other users to not have the same problem?

Pay it forward....
Thanks
Dave

Re: Can't display both US and Canadian charts at the same time

Dave,

The simple answer is: I should have taken better care in verifying my destination directories. I was looking at one problem not realizing I was creating another.

There is a multitude of overlapping charts and trying to get down to what you want vs. what you have can be trying. Only seeing three active chart segments, does not help.

I had manually unloaded and deleted the US ENC's leaving me with the Canadian charts. So far, so good. Then . . .

In downloading a new set of the US RNC's, I made the error of skimming and seeing what I expected to see. I downloaded the new charts into OpenCPN's default location rather than my preferred location.

User error.

This thread made me slow down an d pay attention to what I was doing.
