Nasty new clause from Pantaenius Insurance

Hi all,

Not sure if this hit anyone else, but this new clause has appeared on my insurance from Pantaenius this year:

“Anchor Warranty - Any damage resulting from the boat breaking free and dragging whilst UNATTENDED at anchor is NOT covered under this policy. This clause supersedes existing clauses in the PDS.”

This is a serious change to the policy from a cruising boat perspective. Something many of you may be affected by.

Matt

Re: Nasty new clause from Pantaenius Insurance

Interesting, I renewed mine in October and didn't see anything like this. Need to read again just to make sure.

What happens if you anchor and go ashore for the day? I kind of see if you leave the boat at anchor for weeks on end, but short periods?

Have you spoken to them, perhaps they may remove the clause.

Pete

Re: Nasty new clause from Pantaenius Insurance

this does seem pretty harsh. recall the previous clause was no cover if unattended overnight or unattended for more than 24hrs...cannot recall which

and of course there is no cover if unattended at anchor in certain locations (such as airlie beach)

just another turn of the screw...

not much alternative to Pantaenius these days, but what does topsail say ?

cheers,

If Australia only then Club Marine does not have that clause, although they are not the cheapest around.

It is just to lead up to the next clause "Coverage ends if something happens to the boat"

2. loss or damage caused when the vessel is unattended at anchor:
2.1. when a Severe Weather Warning has been issued for the anchorage area; and

Feels like insurance is beginning to be something you have just so you can check the box for marinas and boat yards. Not something that actually provides the insured any financial protections/assurances.

“The cheapest insurance is a good anchor”. It’s been said many times.

Can't say I blame them for not wanting to payout when a boat has been left unattended when a severe weather warning has been issued...

In that sense, marinas only care about the liability part of it, not the hull coverage.

People will feel pressured to do that. Without insurance, you're open to liability, salvage, and cleanup charges that could far exceed your boat's value.

Or take their boat somewhere safe.

Well, if you do stay on your boat at anchor during a severe weather event make sure you tell your next of kin this is why you're doing it.

It says loss or damage. Any liability or cleanup charges should still be covered.
