Not necessarily, but they do play the real game.

Heh . . . interesting point-of-view.

Sorry for the thread drift, MarkJ. How is the search for capable crew for your TransAt going? Lots of people headed across the pond for the Caribbean at the time you want to cross, so I doubt you'll find it too difficult to locate crew.

It's the "capable" part that can be tricky.

Good luck.

I'm thinking of dropping the 'capable' bit. I am thinking that I would prefer to take someone who is about to buy their own boat, or maybe already has their own boat and wants to go crusing but needs experience etc. Maybe someone who thinks they are less than 'capable', but are highly motivated to learn. (really what David-O-J's principles are in his sub-forum)

I'm still figuring it out. But taking someone who just wants to be crew doesn't really seem to do much for the crusing community as we know it here.

Also I am still thinking about going solo. I guess I will know after this leg to Gib which will be by myself.

Sail round Gib, steer north and stop in the Channel Islands and take DOJ with you. He often hints about being incapable, but I think that's the beer.

Back when I was doing deliveries I was always looking for crew. After a while I figured out I didn't care if they were capable or not. Did a couple of trips with crew that had never been on a boat in their lives. Basically two requirements.

1. Stay awake and steer for 3-4 hours and keep a lookout for for large objects like ships or land.

2. Wake me up if they heard, saw, smelled or even imagined anything!!!!

Worked quite well most of the time.

I wish I could take the time off. You are one of the few people I think I would feel comfortable doing something like that with.

That is, if you'd let me bring my paper charts and sextant!

Well Mark, I only just heard about this, as I have been out of the loop for a bit moving up closer to the Arctic Circle. It is going to be very difficult to picture you without Nic at your side, but being myself a solo sailor most of the time, I know you will do well. In the long run, it is probably good for you both to pursue dreams of your own and thus have no regrets later in life when you might after journeying roads less traveled, meet again at a cross roads and decide you are going the same way.

God's speed and fair winds.

Dang. Sounds like a perfect job description for me... only about 6 months ahead of my ability to take off! Good luck with your crew search and crossing.
