Re: Top Items on board

@ Mike OReilly, we burn presto logs while at the dock and can easily store two weeks worth aboard our 48' ketch. We burn on average two logs a day and it never goes out while we're aboard. When...

Re: Am I crazy to buy a boat on the east coast when I live in Southern California?

From our home in Oregon we have purchased a vessel on the Great Lakes sight unseen. Some deals are just too good to pass up. Ours turned out to be a great experience. If the boat you think of...

Re: Top Items on board

Hands down, our Cubic Mini wood-fired heater. It transforms an otherwise dank boat into a cozy warm, home away from home.

Re: Is Singlehanding >24 Hrs. Morally Wrong?

The closes I've come to colliding with a singlehander was when on watch heading from Bermuda north to Nova Scotia during the single singlehanded Bermuda race from RI. I was deeply engrossed in my...

Re: Dinghy, to name or not to name?

There was a time when painting TT or "tender to" followed by mothership name on your skiff essentially exempted your shore boat from local regulations regarding registering your dinghy and outboard...

Re: How to choose a dinghy

For the San Juans I recommend a good fiberglass skiff that motors, rows, sails and skulls well. You can always cut it in half and glass in a couple of bulkheads so it can nest one half inside the...

Re: Help me figure out how to rig this boat!

On second look, I'd say that the spar with the flattened end is the bowsprit and that the flattened end gets sandwiched in between the upright Sampson posts at the bow.

Re: Anyone have any idea what this is?

I disagree with this being designed and built as a lee cloth. There would not likely be but two grommets on one side. I suspect it was intended as a spray cloth intended to be secured to the...

Re: Help me figure out how to rig this boat!

I am curious if this is a vessel built by John T. Taylor in 1968?

It could be that the spar with the flattened end (notched) is the gaff minus the cheek blocks. In that the mast has a sheave a...

Re: Are More Expereinced Sailors Actually Safer? Prove It.

Experience is what you get when you don’t get what you want. If you’re smart enough to learn from your and other’s experiences then yes, you get safer. The proof is in the fact that experienced...

Re: Engine Spares For Remote Cruising

Plus one for a64pilot. I now carry flex hose with banjo ends long enough to fit several of these external oil routing applications as well hose barbs that fit these oil cooler line outlets, spare...

Re: Engine Spares For Remote Cruising

I run a 4JH3 HTE and do a great deal of very remote cruising. I carry many of the spares already mentioned but I wish very much that I had carried a spare set of the oil cooling lines that run from...

Re: The unequally capable cruising couple

I suggest that if your wife isn’t proficient at docking your vessel, that you find a safe place to practice this over and over until she is as confident as you or more so in getting into and out of a...

Re: California to Costa Rica

The last time I was anchored in the Gulf of Dulce, there was an 18 foot sloop anchored alongside. He had sailed down from Newport, CA. On board was a gal who was new to sailing who had answered a...

Re: DIY plans for dock steps?

I have had very good feed back from our two small Bichon Frise pups after I secured indoor outdoor carpet to the top platform (which is twice the size of each tread) as this carpet helps them make...

Re: why didn't this happen???...

Your HC38 did exactly what I would have suspected. Laying ahull is a very good thing but not very comfortable. As the boat rises up the swell it heels away from the wave, exposing the hull (strongest...

Re: DIY plans for dock steps?

I use steps very similar to those that Jimbunyard has sketched. An addition or rather an omission that make mine different is that I have left out the front face of each step so that my steps double...

Re: VOR boat in Fatal Collision.

Scant information available online. My niece Sofie on Mapfre said that they had two bow watchers at the mast to see under the Code Zero and the navigator was on lookout as well with an iPad mirroring...

Re: VOR boat in Fatal Collision.

Just spoke to my brother whose daughter was behind Vestas, on MAPFRE. The fleet of fishing vessels, gillnetters, were all poorly lit. Most carried a single kerosine lamp at their mast head. Regarding...

Re: Electrically quiet 12 VDC power supply

I second Robert Tilbury. I’ve had great service with mine and designed with quiet foremost. I would shop the second hand Ham gear sites.
