Anyone have any idea what this is?

Hi,

I found this on a boat I purchased over the summer and can't figure out what it is for. Dimensions are approx 38" x 16". It is fairly heavy canvas and the tag says Medof Marine. Please disregard the stain. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

This is easy.
It's a lee cloth. Keeps you from falling out of your bumk under sail.

Great, thank you! I'm familiar with Lee Cloths, but since the boat is already equipt with Lee Cloths, it didn't occur to me.

Would you like to get rid of them if you already have lee cloths? I was planning to make some for my boat. Let me know!

I disagree with this being designed and built as a lee cloth. There would not likely be but two grommets on one side. I suspect it was intended as a spray cloth intended to be secured to the lifelines beside your cockpit.

I believe in the UK, this wold be called a dodger ... a canvas you attach to the lifelines on either side of the cockpit for wind/sun protection and privacy ...

Also known, perhaps confusingly, as a weather cloth. Dodgers in North America, of course, are the bits that screen off the companionway looking forward.

I may be wrong. It appeared to have 5 grommets per long edge.

Re: Anyone have any idea what this is?

mmm...boat already equiped with lee cloths, and this item made with grommets out
of heavy canvas...
Seems boat equipped for weather, seas.
Is a Weather cloth, see if grommets line up with lifelines.
Great for boarding seas, spray, wind break. Wonderful for long cold night watches.
Thinking you all have seen pictures of offshore boats with name/numbers on them.

Re: Anyone have any idea what this is?

Not a lee cloth at that length
Also not a fender skirt with intermediate eyelets to chafe top sides
Must be a weather cloth or similar

Re: Anyone have any idea what this is?

Can you find anything aboard that matches that grommet spacing? It appears to be a nicely made item. Keep on looking.
