The Cal 40 was a great boat and some would say revolutionary. They were prone to a bit of oil canning in the bow and many owners added stringers between forward ribs to stiffen this area. Looks like they attempted something similar here.

Try THIS link:

I only posted the BEST photos here on CF that look nice.

The Shutterfly listing has MANY more that show the details of condition (some water stains in interior, dirty areas, some corrosion, questionable wood trim condition etc.). That is why I asked.
Still looks good considering her age to my eye! but then I am older than the boat.

Absolutely great boat as long as you are not the crew who has to sleep in the bow going upwind in a steep chop

Southern Cross 31, 1981

Asking Price (Oct 2016) $19,995

I came across this boat today while looking for more boats for this thread. From what I can see in the photos, it looks to be in much better condition than MOST boats of this age (1981) and looks surprisingly clean for a boat at this price point.

You can find a very good review about this boat type on bluewaterboats.org.

Good find. I wonder if that boat is the one discussed weeks ago that was to be auctioned or sold for charity in northern Florida, as I recall due to death of owner.

We can't see much from the listing, but I would check it out ASAP if I were in the area. I would prefer a Freedom 28 over the more common Catalina 27 etc. I like the Freedom boats with only two exceptions so far that do not appeal to me. So I would be inclined to investigate this even if priced at three time should the asking price. But as always, Caveat Emptor!

Re: Boats Less Than $30K Recent Noteworthy Finds

Freedom 28 Cat Ketch

DRAFT = 2.5 feet minimum (Centerboard up)

The Freedom 28 Cat Ketch is a small recreational keelboat, built predominantly of fiberglass. It has an unstayed cat ketch rig, a transom-hung rudder and a swing-up centerboard. It displaces 7,000 lb (3,175 kg) and carries 3,800 lb (1,724 kg) of lead ballast.[1][2]

The spars are made from carbon fiber. The initial models were produced with wrap-around sleeve-type sails and wishbone booms, but these were later changed to more conventional sails and booms.[1]

The boat is fitted with a Japanese Yanmar 2GMF diesel engine of 15 hp (11 kW) and has a fuel tank with a capacity of 18 U.S. gallons (68 L; 15 imp gal). It also has a 30 U.S. gallons (110 L; 25 imp gal) water tank.[1]

The boat has a PHRF racing average handicap of 204 with a high of 186 and low of 240. It has a hull speed of 6.8 kn (12.59 km/h).[2]

Thanks for posting the photo links. I also could not get the CL photo link to work. Acknowledged on the photos. The listing does not have a flashing presentation. In checking a few things, it appears the seller is a octogenarian. Someone else (i.e. an offspring or grandkid), with less involvement in the boat may be helping with the listing. But, the photos appear accurate. The "flashing" shiny ones and hide many things. IMHO, the bottom line on the H-38 is the strength to her bones. The hull & deck laminates on those boats were/are durable & the bolts keeping things together were usually good/top quality & it was not uncommon for monel to have been used.

On the Cal, they were & still are fast. I find the knees an interesting addition. It would be interesting to know the background as to when & why they were added. The

NOTES:
I found a very interesting review article about this design written by Naval Architect Chuck Paine (the designer). In the illustrated article, he mentioned several insights he had after designing this boat. He mentions the favorable design characteristics of Sharpie and Catboat designs that influenced this design. He also wrote that he learned more from THIS design than any others he designed. He also wrote about what he sees as the shortcomings of this particular design. I found his article interesting to read and learned some things from it. I recommend it to anyone who is researching catboats or Sharpies. Here is a link: http://www.chuckpaine.com/pdf/24bahamasandpiper24.pdf

Re: Boats Less Than $30K Recent Noteworthy Finds

Grampian 30, 1974

Asking Price = $14,900
Location = Wisconsin

Steady NOTES: I am posting this listing because this is the first of this model of boat that I have enjoyed seeing. Because it is a popular brand, I looked for a good example to illustrate this thread. I think this particular boat is an outstanding example to use as an illustration. Why? Because this boat has been completely refinished, and from the photos it appears like new. Take a look.

For someone looking for a very nice condition boat, at a lower price point, this may be a good choice. But, as with any boat, Caveat Emptor. I have NO connection to the boat or seller. I am simply posting this listing because this boat caught my eye (because of its "like new" appearance) and as it may help a CF member.

NOTE 2: I am posting 10 photos of this particular boat (from sale listing) because it looks like new. The photo of the boat at anchor is from a different source and may not be the same boat.

?? What do you mean "for free?"

The sale listing says $1,500 OBO.

Granted, that is VERY low for a boat this size.
