This thread started in 2011 and is still going because there is so much good music to sail by. Sailing has as many moods as there are types of music, so sailing and music work well together. I agree it's the OP that Southern Cross by Crosby Stills and Nash may be the best single sailing song (if you could only have one), but a great collection of sailing songs about places and sailing life in the British Virgin Islands comes from an unlikely source--Kenny Chesney, who is basically a country music singer. The CD is called "Be As You Are". Don't overlook it. Buy it cheap on eBay or download it on iTunes.

You might also like" Double Indemnity" believe the name of the band has changed but should be able to find them on you tube under that name.The first and second albums were the good stuff Imo..

I can see where in that case you might think the lyrics a bit grim; but I assure you, were you an old school shipwright like me, you'd be more likely to find them hilarious. "Catalpa" is about the Catalpa rescue, wiki linked in the original post. Nothing depressing there, unless maybe you're an imperialist Brit who hates freedom! "Chip", however, is I assume where you take issue. FYI, Chip or Chips is the traditional name for any ship's carpenter. The idea that Chip is willing to sell his soul to the Devil for a bucket o' nails and a roll of copper ought to resonate with anyone who has done that sort of work. Certainly I've been willing to do the same on any number of build projects!



Both of these songs are very old Scottish folk songs, given a modern Celt-Punk take by my Canadian neighbors. Can't really be understood by anyone who's never attempted a Highland reel in the mosh pit at a punk show! So I understand your confusion, and appreciate your concern.
