Re: OpenCPN Version 4.8.0 Released

Hi again folks,

Well I tried 4.8.0 again , reset the database and refreshed the charts and all was well for about 5 hours....

then I zoomed in on a local marina....

and thats when it hit

All my AIS targets are gone
All my maps are solid (they work fine in 4.4.0)
the screen flicks between "not responding" and the map trying to zoom in and out . Presently its sitting here in a locked condition consuming 53-55% cpu & rising slowly suggesting a memory leak ? I cant kill it except via task manager.

4.4.0 on the other hand continues to work flawlessly in parallel :-/

i'll try the ini file again :-(

regards

Re: OpenCPN Version 4.8.0 Released

after further jiggery pokery - the issue is definitely caused by zooming on the mouse scroller. I moved all the plugins to a "pluggedout" folder and created a new blank plugins folder to rule those out too.

at low res mapping I can scroll in-out, in-out to my hearts content - but when I scroll right in ...it locks....

... after around 40-45 seconds it begins to scroll out again - checking task manager its now peaking at 53% whereas it normally runs at about 0.2-2.4 after about a further 3-4 mins it dropped back to 1.7 now its creeping about 1% every 5 minutes - I guess if I leave it long enough it will bomb.

Regards

If you turn off OpenGL does it change anything?

Yes, turn off OpenGL, but first see if you have texture mapping "ON". That specifically has caused problems for me so I leave it off.

Rick...

What problems are you seeing with texture mapping?
That is a reasonably important performance enhancement in GL, and it should work....

Thanks
Dave

Re: OpenCPN Version 4.8.0 Released

Dave, I just turned it back on, and I am using the NVIDIA drivers for Opencpn. It seems to be working with my Geforce board ok.

I believe the problem I had was with the Intel HD Graphics Board, which forced me to turn off the Texture Mapping. I don't recall how it failed, but OpenCPN was unusable with texture mapping on. I was distracted by other things that needed fixing, like plugins and just went on. This occurred some time ago (not more than 6-7 months) and I have always had it off since then. This is a Dell Inspiron XPS 15.

I can reset OpenCPN to the HD Graphics Board and try Texture Mapping on that if you would like.

PS: I thought it was just because I had an older Intel HD graphics board (I think it is a 4000)

Rick...

Intel GL graphics has lots of problems, but AFAIK, texture compression is not one of them.

Will you try the Intel card (at your convenience), and let me know what happens?

Thanks
Dave

Re: OpenCPN Version 4.8.0 Released

I am finding it hard to keep up with what is happening daily with "O" so if already discussed my advanced apologies.

To use keyboard short cuts I must first ensure I am active on the main "O" map window.
So if I click on any toolbar icons (active on tool bar) and then try any short cut I get no result.

I would think that being active on any part of the "O" program would allow me to use short cuts.
Ubuntu 16.04
Open 4.8

Dave
Is the Ubuntu unity desktop manager problem you reported to me here the same culprit?

redog...

The same issue. The window configured to capture keystrokes must be active in order to capture them. In the case of OCPN, that means the main chart window, and not the toolbar. There is no facility for "application-wide" keystroke capture in most linux desktop managers.

Sorry

Re: OpenCPN Version 4.8.0 Released

I have just upgraded from 4.4.0 to 4.8.0 and have several issues.

First install caused Win 7 to loose it's location for Desktop. Various logins under admin and a lot of fiddling about with restores to get back to normal. Googling this indicates that O might be installing to a "Trusted Area" without the right permissions. My crash was related to the "Desktop" where O installs it short cut.

The "Target" value in the shortcut properties was blank and greyed out.

I may have got it to work because I was logged in as Administrator. I will roll it back to 4.4.0 and try installing 4.8.0 as a user and report back.

Are there any procedural differences between the 4.4.0 install and the 4.8.0 install?

Re: OpenCPN Version 4.8.0 Released

Further issues relating to 4.8.0

1. Reinstalled 4.4.0 and checked it worked OK - It did.
2. Re-reinstalled 4.8.0 - Locked out when scrolling right in. Can only exit O with Task Mgr
3. Tried again. Discovered that I had no Plugins, yet Grib and Radar and Dashbord appear to be there Dashboard is showing wind and depth and Grib operated before I clicked on spanner see below. I can get to Radar controls from Right Click but it does not scan.

The problem seems to occur when you select the spanner on the graphic toolbar. The toolbar disappears and does not reappear when the tools window is closed. At this point you cannot exit O. It appears to be processing data and you can scroll and pan but not exit.

Tupaia...
The installation related stuff on Windows did not change for years, definitely not between 4.4 and 4.8.

Re: OpenCPN Version 4.8.0 Released

Tupaia..
This may be a long shot but worth a try.
When you say "There are no plugins"; is that when you open the plugins tab in tools-options?
If so it may be you have some old plugins somewhere in your plugins folder, C:\......\OpenCPN\Plugins\. There are some other reports for such an issue and there is bug in OCPN so the plugin blacklist can't all times show a message for a dated plugin.
What you can do:
Check if have an old S63_pi in the plugin folder, see attached picture. If so delete the entire S63 folder and try OCPN again.
If you're using the S63 plugin install a fresh one.
The mentioned bug will for sure be corrected in next release.
