Re: OpenCPN Version 4.6.1 Released

mrm...

On the gray areas at Kos Island....

I see them on O4.4.0 also. So not a good thing, but not a regression either.

Only appears on the E scale chart of this region. That is a clue, I think.

Anyway, it goes on the longer term list.

Thanks
Dave

Moo...

Workaround for the 7" screen:

In Options->UserInterface->Fonts, select a smaller font size for item "Dialogs".

Actually, with the default fonts, there is not a lot of real estate available for some of the complex dialogs. This one was not well tested...

Thanks
Dave

Thank you Dave,

I have tried that. I have taken the "dialog" font size down to 8; which is about as small as if usable everywhere else. The text in the tabs "Predefined" and "Custom" now fits but the "Chart Directory" pane still sits on top of the "Catalogue" pane and no catalogues are visible.

Screen shot attached.

Re: OpenCPN Version 4.6.1 Released

[QUOTE=redog;2364018]Hi
When I open Draw Manager with icon, then close with red x or the OK button, it takes 2 clicks of the icon to open the draw manager again.
However if I close by clicking the icon, it only takes 1 click to reopen.

Same problem with show NMEA debug window.
When I tick box for NMEA, the window appears.
When I use the red X the window disappears, but the tick remains.
I have to then untick the box, then retick to see the NMEA window appear.
If I try to untick the box while NMEA window is still open, the window just goes to the background of the options window.
If I close the options window with the box ticked, it opens the next time with the tick still showing but no NMEA window opens.

Also red x in dashboard window is on the RH top corner,(always has) all other windows it appears LH top,(ubuntu standard) a bit confusing for those reliant on glasses especially in night conditions.

O 4.6.1
ubuntu 16.04

That is not new for 4.6.1. The NMEA debug window has been reworked several times in the past but was never functional correct.

Re: OpenCPN Version 4.6.1 Released

redog...

The problem with the NMEA Debug window state relates to the Ubuntu Unity Desktop manager. In linux land, desktop manager conformance to specifications is spotty at best. Even the specs themselves are spotty, as the managers themselves are built on various implementations of X11.

Bottom line: wxWidgets does it's best to manage the z-layer and internal state of unmanageable desktops on linux, but fails in some cases.

Same kind of thing happens on Mac, but for slightly different reasons.

For whatever reason, KDE works fine on some machines, not right on others.. Not sure about all of the other Desktop managers/Environments out there.

We would rather not code directly to system-dependent desktop managers, but prefer to leave that heavy lifting to wxWidgets. And so we have some quirks on linux Ubuntu.

Rumour on the street is that Unity goes away next year. Maybe this is good for us...

Dave...

from the press:

Quote:
Ubuntu Unity is dead: Desktop will switch back to GNOME next year

Canonical founder Mark Shuttleworth explained the move in a blog post Wednesday. "I’m writing to let you know that we will end our investment in Unity8, the phone and convergence shell," he wrote. "We will shift our default Ubuntu desktop back to GNOME for Ubuntu 18.04 LTS," which will ship in April 2018.

What about using left rather than top tabs on desktop OS?

No it isn't.

You have to recompile after changing in src/options.cpp wxLB_TOP to wxLB_LEFT and wxNB_TOP to wxNB_LEFT around line 4680.

Just upgraded to 4.6.1. Much better performance than 4.6 with Open GL on. However still not as smooth as 4.4. Gets a bit choppy when zooming and panning around. Running Windows 7.

Could you provide more details?

If I can reproduce your result I can fix it.

Just when I scroll/drag zoom in/out, the map around to look at it. It's not smooth like it is in 4.4. It's choppy, with an occasional freeze for a moment, then starts working again. Currently using a DB with alot of waypoints, but same one as I did on 4.4.

J805...

Interested in perceived or real performance differences with OCPN 4.6.1.

What charts are you using? Using OpenGL?

Thanks
Dave

NOAA Raster Charts with OpenGL on.

It's a pretty large amount of waypoints, but it did still run smoother in 4.1 as far as panning around and zooming goes. With 4.6, there are momentary freezes here and there when doing so.
