No, actually I never got to use that tool, I only read about in the help that came with last beta release... May be it was implemented only in an older beta version and later removed but the information about it is still in the manual.

fwiw, I agree.

QGIS acts like that as well (bsb, geotiff, ...), and it works without ever having to think about what it's doing. I had to figure out by experimentation that OpenCPN wasn't actually broken when I gave the wheel a good ol' spin when I wanted a rapid zoom in. especially as my new mouse doesn't have tactile per-cog feedback, it just smoothly rolls like a guitar without frets.

thanks,
Hamish

Re: OpenCPN Version 2.4 Beta Build 506

Having just crossed biscay on this beta, two things:

1- Quilting problem - as per attached screenshot, it actually goes on and on from chart to chart. Rectified by turning off quilting.

2- A "feature" common to all previous versions so perhaps more of a feature removal request:

My GPS unit (within AIS) likes to pack up and send spurious values sometimes (102 knots some random direction, no position data). It (usually) tends to recover after a few "reboots".

Opencpn attempts to display this nonsensical data, resulting in a weird black screen (no charts) with some random red lines. Sadly I couldn't get a screenshot due to the panic of being gps less on a F7 lee shore

How could gps error recognition be done?

Thanks for your attention

Dave has stated that the smearing issue had been dealt with in the current beta.

The documentation in Git is only updated for stable releases. If you like a more up to date documentation go to the wiki, and why not give a hand in updating!
In other words, the help file documentation in 2.4.xxx beta is still the old 2.3.1 documentation.

Re: OpenCPN Version 2.4 Beta Build 506

Getting an error message installing the latest git on ubuntu 11.04:

Quote:
Lintian check results for /home/user/Desktop/dload/opencpn_2.4.506-1_i386.deb:
E: opencpn: wrong-file-owner-uid-or-gid usr/ 1000/1000
Installs and runs fine anyway

I'm not sure I agree with this: my experience is that subsequent wheel rotations keep that point (the one to be zoomed) only if you follow it from its original location in the screen to the new one in the center. Is it different for you? Wouldn't it be far more straightforward if the point of the chart under the mouse pointer were not centered in the screen, but kept in the same place, under the mouse, so continuous wheel rotation zoomed exactly that area? This is the standard way other software (i.e. Maxsea) does.
Antonio
Yes, it's different for me. When I zoom with the scrolling device the point under the mouse pointer jumps to the center of the screen and stays there as I scroll in and out. (Did I mention I'm running Windows Vista?) Of course, you will get that behavior only if you don't move the mouse while scrolling. And it took me several hours to figure out what was happening because, like you, I thought at first that I had to chase the point of interest with the mouse pointer.

Test it carefully. Pick some readily identifiable feature away from the center of the display and scroll in and out without moving the mouse. Let me know how it works for you. If you're using a real mouse it might be harder to avoid accidentally moving the mouse as you scroll than it is for me. I'm using the scroll bar on my laptop's touchpad, so accidental mouse movement is less likely.

Since I'm interested in getting a closer look at the area under the mouse pointer I like having it moved to the center of the screen. That prevents some important details from disappearing off the edge as I zoom in closer. And I think everything would be more apparent if the mouse pointer were moved to the center of the screen along with the point of interest.

I wouldn't mind if the point of interest were kept under the mouse pointer as you suggest. If a nearby feature fell off the edge it would be simple enough to drag the chart so it was back in the frame. Either way would be an improvement over the current behavior.

Re: OpenCPN Version 2.4 Beta Build 506

Hi Windows users.....

Not to be a nag, but I am still (patiently) waiting for a dump file after cm93-quilt-drag crash. Anybody got, or can get one?

This one won't go away by itself.....

Thanks
Dave

Re: OpenCPN Version 2.4 Beta Build 506

antxon/fabbian.....

Sounds to me like we just need to warp-move the cursor to center screen after zoom-to-cursor action. In this way, the user zoom action and cursor position are consistent.

Does this sound right?

Re: OpenCPN Version 2.4 Beta Build 506

Dave

How many times has this bug caused a crash, for how many users?
Are none of these users willing or able to assist?
Anything in common between their systems?
Are all XP? Similar hardware? Same installation/upgrade pattern etc etc?
Any particular edition of CM93?

If I new, I might be able to find a similar system to install OpenCPN and test. Other members may be in a similar situation.

Re: OpenCPN Version 2.4 Beta Build 506

Thomas....

Typical reports are:

FS#405 : Crash when starting with auto-follow engaged and try to drag chart

and

http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...tml#post685459

Common ground is:
Windows, any flavor( hints of Vista prevalence)
cm93, (probably)
quilting on, probably in full-screen mode,
autofollow "on".

I don't have Vista, so cannot narrow it down further. In fact, I have not seen this crash, ever, on native or virtual XP, nor on virtual Win7.

This one feels like memory corruption, and as you know, these types of bugs are wily beasts. Hiding mostly, but not gone, only to reappear in the field after deploying thousands of copies......

Thanks
Dave
