I use a trackball so no problem for me. I'm not a great fan of touch pads. I find it hard enough to keep the screen clean and dry while underway without pawing it.

Personally, I think that touchscreens on board are still not widespreaded because many sailors still use Note-/ Netbooks and they normally aren't equiped with touchscreens.
But we also know of users from the forum that they use touchscreens as second display (outside/ in the Cockpit).
And we are just learning in Web Design (due to the rapidly increasing number of Smartphones with touchscreens) that they require a completely different way of operating.
So it might be a good idea to add two different ways of operating between which can easily be switched by choosing the desired way in the config settings (e.g. by radio buttons)?

And I will admit that touchscreens, when they're bright enough to be daylight viewable, are power hogs and for that reason too not found on many sailing vessels. Of course I've got two diesels driving alternators when underway...

Crash
I think I have something (cannot use debug as I am on Vista) and don't know if related to what Dave has recently found.
Here are the conditions (I don't know yet which is/are crucial)
- CM93 charts on
- A Kap chart (here in fact a 'Google chart' from GE2KAP) covering the boat location at a zoom level that will fill most of the screen
- Screen position centered on boat position
- Quilting and borders both ON
Crashes immediately on dragging the chart....
Here is a screenshot at open up time and wiew of Toolbox settings

Testing factors (506, Vista, CM93)
- Having charts limits on seems irrelevant
- As often said, quilting off prevents crash
- centering the boat (i.e. just before closing) seems mandatory
- The Kap chart is relevant (without it, no crash)
...
Will now investigate the Kap chart

Another chart (Old BSB SHOM chart from commercial Bayo CD)
With Kap chart in focus (straddling center screen, blue bar), and boat not centered, no crash
Centering the boat before closing : crash
Screenshot: exemple of crash condition
- Kap in focus
- CM93
- Boat centered
Close and reopen > crash
(Been hunting that for weeks...)
PS GE2KAP 'Google charts' are not to blame

Tried once again. Confirmed. No crash when Dasboard is disabled. Crash when enabled (I don't mean on screen, just turned on through the Toolbox/plugin menu)

Re: OpenCPN Version 2.4 Beta Build 506
...and then it may be a VISTA thing, sailorF54,but I know less than nothing about Vista... I've only got XP and I can't get it to crash with Dashboard on or with a few others added.I've got a bunch of KAPS loaded with CM93 too...
I seem to have lost my knack...
PS:I sure sympathise with the backtracking calisthenics...the: " Is it it My experimental file?" etc...it's work, this stuff!

Re: Windows 7 64-bit?
I'm sure this was covered long ago (and I didn't bother to read it since I've been XP 32-bit) but will OCPN run under Windows 7 64-bit?
I'm building a new box and going to go 64.
thanks

Re: OpenCPN Version 2.4 Beta Build 506
Hello
Have been using Open CPN for over a year now, and love it, but i have been building quite a few Waypoints and Courses, and have started worrying about the Computer Crashing, and loseing my waypoints, What is the best and simplest way to back up my Waypoints and Routes on a Thumb Drive or other portable Disk, to save in case my Hard Drive Crashes.
Thanks

Hmmm ..., if I got you right then probably the best way will be to export all your Waypoints, Tracks and Routes via the Route Manager.
And backup the exported files where ever you like.
BTW: The files are exported in GPX format which is widely known by many applications.
