Exactly when will a translated version be used ?
Will OpenCPN automatically translate to the computers default language if a translation-file is available?? I hope not!
There are many situations when a user do not want the language that is set as default on a computer for a particular application.

My suggestion is a tab in the toolbox where the user can choose from available languages. This setting can be saved in the config file.
This gives max freedom of choice for the user, and I imagine that this can make life easier for Dave as well

Folks...

2 items:

1. I am removing the log messages from the .pot file, so they will always be in en_US. New .pot and merged .po's (three now) coming in Beta.
English sure makes (my) debugging easier....

2. Cagney's point: As designed now, I'm afraid that Cagney will be disappointed. Opencpn will adopt the system default locale at run-time.

2 solutions:
a. Adopt and code Cagney's idea, adding a selection to Toolbox->Etc for language of choice, choosing among the available .mo files.
--or--
b. At least on linux, start opencpn as

LANG=en_US opencpn

I don't know how to do the same thing on Windows.....Anybody?

Many programmes include a selection menu as proposed by cagney to override the system locale.. although using a different locale is probably not the standard use case. It may suffice to put instructions for overriding into the helpfile for the time being to save on the programming efforts..

Please go with Cagneys suggestion. (2a in your list)

I would hate to have different language versions depending on which computer/locale I am using, I would really, really like to be in charge of that choice myself.

Alternatively - make it an installation choice. Let the user choose which language to use during installation.
But Cagneys solution is nicer.

I guess the simplest possible solution would be to leave the program in english always. I wouldn't mind, - even I already spent a couple of hours today translating messages into danish

Wouldn't that be able to solve the 'black screen decimal_point'-problem also?

I don't know what the '&' means, - in the danish translation I just left the '&' at the same position in the danish text. But I was in doubt about what to do with e.g. 'C&olour', but I made it 'F&arve' (in danish).

The '\n' means that the message will continue on a new line. Like a carriage return on the keyboard..

I make few test with beta 1222 and my french opencpn_fr_Fr.po (mo) with my linux version (home compil, and also with last beta XP).
Some entry are not translated ex : jpg

Hello Frenchies/Danes with "&"-questions!

The "&" signifies the hotkey location, that is, the letter after the "&" is going to be the hotkey for calling said function in the menu from the keyboard. Take care not to duplicate certain keys within the same menu

2 ways to do it.
You can rename the .po file so the ending is .po.doc , it will then be possible to upload it to this forum.

Alternatively, mail it to Dave. Mail address is i OpenCPN ==> ?(About) ==> Authors .
