General information relevant to this thread:

Until a significant number of people perform a linux/OpenCpn installation on different tablets, we won't know what kind of results people are getting. The consequence is that common problems cannot be addressed in a comprehensive manner. Unless you are planning to buy a xoom like mine, are running the same kernel version and rom, using the same or very similar gps -- you may or may not get the same results. So, go ahead and do the rooting and installation so more people are working together on this project. Do not wait to see my results. Depending upon the above variables you may have a working gps before I do.

A rooted device can be unrooted and returned to factory rom if that's what you want. Nothing you try here is undoable.

Linux Installer does not supply a 'normal user'. Linux Deploy supplies as close to a normal user as you will get in a chroot environment. The default name of this user is 'android'. Not my doing...

'Easier' in the title to this thread would be understood by anyone who read my original instructions. You were required to compile and install wxWidgets. No longer and this installation faster and easier.

I would go with ubuntu...as there kernel support is more advanced then debian. A couple of things Armdo.

1. Linux is linux, in the case its an ARM port to match your processor, some flavours are more up to date then others.

2. When you do an exercise like this, its very important to document your steps for two reasons. (a) so others can help you (b) the claims you make are verifiable. If it cant be replicated on another machine or by another user its considered bogus.

3. Not meaning to be hard on you but when it comes to linux, its very important to document everything, like the steps you take, saying I followed your instructions, is not valid in this scenario, consider it a science experiement that is your obligation to provide the information so that others can repeat your steps.

4. I see no evidence from what you present that the device is located at USB0.

5. A corroded port, would not give the partial dmesg output that you present. It is far more likely the the USB controller is barfing with a kernel oops as from the partial data that you present there are no device assignments. Its a known issue with this chipset as posted the the kernel developers are working on. But to be sure I need a complete dmesg output.

6. I have not seem a complete dmesg output but have requested it three times now.

7. Suggestion: get debian off that machine, install ubuntu, it more up todate, and repeat the exercise, create the needed user accoount armido and then post the complete "dmesg" output.

8. This is a good exercise and needs to be done, but you are not providing enough technical information that can be verified. That is a learning curve issue as well.

Stick with it, but give us some data to play or at least look at and by that I mean step by step procedures with machine associated output. Its work but its worth it.

Thanks for your information on TeamServer, have it working now on my linux machine. The last update did the trick and I have the desktop on now on my little Samsung Ace phone....pretty cool but slow.

What you are seeing is a standard exercise to get linux running on a particular machine. Its an exercise and many times leads to a dead end until the kernel group get the drivers sorted. It would be a lot easier if companies released the data on the chip sets but not enough do for a variety of reasons. The main issue is always kernel support of the hardware and what you are watching is an exercise to determine if the hardware is indeed supported. The gps stuff and application software stuff is really irrelevant at this point as what needs to be determined is if all the hardware on the Motorola zoom is in fact detected properly. That is always the first step. So changing to another tablet or using a windows based tablet would not solve _that_ problem perhaps others.

So the exercise for now is to determine if in fact all the hardware is recognized, the proper drivers loaded (called modules) and we have a happy kernel doing what it does best...perform at twice the speed of comparative operating systems and typically at less power. Its kinda a hobby to try to make this stuff work.

I am documenting every command, every step - but nothing here has progressed to the point where I can formulate a how-to for others. Plus, the thread progression promotes people going to the very end of the thread - skipping everything between. When there is enough to present in a helpful way to others I'll ask for consent to post another guide in the Developer's Handbook section at opencpn.org. Step by step guidelines are much more usable than scattershot posts in this thread.

I believe the .txt files I'm sending are no different from what was in the email I sent you - but they're on there way.

Finally, the installers I've used warn people away from Ubuntu at this point. You'd think they have enough knowledge about what's going on to lead people in the right direction.

Maybe you need to obtain a tablet and give this a go yourself - with Ubuntu if that's what suits you. Ignore the developers and see what you accomplish.

Not even close to a howto Armido..what Im getting at is that at this early stage machine output to support an opinion is critical. At this time we dont even know if all the hardware is detected properly. Looking forward to the complete dmesg output. That is the definitive answer.

I've been privy to that thread for a long time. Development has not proceeded for a long time. I am aware of one post recently asking if anyone had images. Have not gone to the thread since then, but will take a look. Would definitely like to replace android altogether!

Complete Linux Installer is another chroot installer. Tried it before using Linux Deploy and cannot recommend. Thought your link would lead me here: Got My Xoom running Debain native (without chroot) - xda-developers Been dormant for a long time, but who knows? From the post I saw recently there may still be development in the wings.

Here is the reason. The usb controller cannot be managed by the linux kernel at this time. The only thing to do is to get the latest development kernel and patches for the controller and you may be in luck. The other alternative, is to wait till the next official release when the changes will be incorporated.

Also this implementation is interesting. Its not a true install rather a virtual system that runs inside the android environment. That generally sucks, however the good news is that in 2014 the android and linux kernel will be merged into one again.

what you see here is the kernel module trying to load the usb controller and allocate a device to it
but it refuses to load, and accept its assignment. It tries several time and fails.

So the conclusion is not good, the usb-subsystem on Xoom is not working hence when
you attach a gps device to it, it does not recognize it.

Does not like code. To summarize the Tegra ECHCI Host Controller is not able to enumerate the devices on the USB bus. In short, I does not give them a device assignment. This is a known issue as reported earlier from the kernel list.

Final comment on this. Everything else looks good, its just the controller that is not working properly that is the kernel module not the hardware. Its being worked on so eventually this will work once the single module is fixed. Work on the module is ongoing.
