Amazon Fire HD 10 & open CPN

Amazon fire HD 10 uses its own version of Android. Therefore my question is will the Open CPN Android version work on the HD 10 Amazon Fire Tablet?

Maybee?
But first you have to adapt it to Play store. Search Google for "How to".
Then it's not clear if there's a GPS on the device and wether it will work after a Play store adaption.
If no better answer shows up here you've to try. The Android version 5.x would be sufficient but what's in the description "Customized" we don't know.

I have opencpn on a fire and it works fine. As previously stated you need to install the google play store so you can download opencpn. If you have a nmea to wifi adapter you get all the boat info which includes gps. I don't use it much, but it is completely functional.

Re: Amazon Fire HD 10 & open CPN

My HD 10 version 2021 seems to have an issue with the internal GPS. Upon start OpenCPN says "Device has internal GPS but is not enabled". Did anyone get that to work?

GPS is enabled
Google Maps works fine
Inside of Location Services OpenCPN is set to allow
However, under "Recent Apps that requested GPS" OpenCPN is not listed. I do not see any NMEA data in the debug screen.

This is by the way the same issue regardless if I use the old free version or the current paid version.

Perhaps I’m mistaken but I didn’t think the Fire tablets had a built in gps. When I have used it, I connected nema on wifi which provided gps data. Perhaps you are not correctly connected to your Nema source.

AllenRbrts: Thanks! You are correct. I was misguided by the message saying "you got GPS but it is disabled". What the Fire HD really seems to have is Wifi based location services.

I will setup a NMEA Wifi bridge to get the AIS data anyway, would have been nice to have GPS but it is not essential.

There are plenty of decent cheap android tablets with GPS on Amazon, why get a Fire? (Check out Blackview, works well for me with OpenCPN.)

The device I'm building isn't just for the Fire. It will work with any device which runs OpenCPN (or other navigation software) and has a WiFi connection.

Of course we're interested. Do you have any more information?

Re: Amazon Fire HD 10 & open CPN

It's based on Wegmatt's Mini-AIS, Ublox's Neo-6M GPS module, and the DT-06 WiFi module, and a Lithium battery, all in a waterproof case. Once I have a prototype running, I'll put it up on Youtube and Hackaday. My next iteration will add a Raspberry Pi Pico W and an RS-422 level shifter to connect to a DSC-enabled transceiver to take advantage of OpenCPN's capability.
