Yes, I do on Linux Mint(O compiled from git last night)
opengl off
is it "caching"? But it seems better now since making up a "portable" version not a clue as to why.

Re: OpenCPN Beta test 4.1.1108 Release

aah. I think I do know why. It's something todo with cm93. In the "portable" I only loaded a local small version of cm93, but removing it and loading the full cm93_2010 gives me the little spinning wheel....it's still spinning and spinning and spinning as I write.

or something like that. swapping back to the local version and I got the same interminable spinning until a restart.

NahanniV...

The "right" way to allow docking of any PlugIn is to modify the PlugIn so that it's windows become wxAUI clients, like Dashboard does. When that is done, the control windows and/or dialogs can float as they do now, or dock if desired.

This is a relatively simple modification, using Dashboard as a sample instance to study.

Perhaps the best thing to move this forward is a Feature Request against the Radar PlugIns....

.. Loading fresh RNC charts is incredibly slow. I wait and wait. It is also very reluctant to get started drawing RNC. I have not had enough time to mess with this to give you a decent report.., but this is a heads up that there is something amiss with regard to Windows. I might be able to do more later this evening.
compile this evening for Windows-
master 0f68023 Merge pull request #476 from chucksk/skewed_chart_cleanup
Did a database rebuild and full scan
Ran RNC charts without opengl, worked effectively and reasonably fast. Very useable!
Cleared texture cache down to 0. Turned on Opengl,
Under Opengl there were very large waits while the charts were processed at 1fps to 4 frps. Occasionally when zoom out (waiting at 4fps) and then zoom in at 7fps. When I pan it is the same problem.
I am sorry but RNC is totally unusable with OpenGL on.

Has anyone else using windows with most recent compile, found this problem?

PS By the way, with RNC using OpenGL and texture cache the 1-4fps is not representative of the speed, there appears to actually a greater pause than that while the program decides how it is going to read or something. (Don't ask me why I think that, please, because I don't know.) What should I be looking for?

CM93 and ENC seem to work much better with Opengl on.
ENC - building Senc at 10-13fps once in cache 17fps and up.
CM93 - 21fps - 50 fps

Re: OpenCPN Beta test 4.1.1108 Release

Rick,

If you manually rebuild the texture cache does that fix the slowdown? Texture cache rebuild is under the OpenGL options (advanced I think). On my cheap laptop it takes about 1 hour to rebuild the texture cache. That's because it have way too many RNC charts.

Re: OpenCPN Beta test 4.1.1108 Release

TDan, I have deleted the cache, and then allowed it to rebuild itself. This is the way I have always done it and it is much slower than it ever was.

Now I have gone into "MS VS2013 for Desktop" loaded and built the project. Then tried debugging O. It runs USCG01 RNC very slowly 0fps but it is stable.
This is the size of RNC files that I have generally used, although previously I could run All RNC on the east coast down to Mexico without much trouble at all, without manually building the texture compression cache.

I am going to try this with OpenGL = ON but turn off texture compression caching to see if it is even equivalent to OpenGL = OFF. Not using MS VS2013 and Debug, but using the compiled program.

Well, it was faster but still much slower than before. It eventually failed and ocpn froze.

Re: OpenCPN Beta test 4.1.1108 Release

Using this evenings compiled version, (not MS VS2013) with Opengl= ON and Texture compression cache = OFF.

This works, is jerky and not as fast as with OpenGL = OFF.

There is something holding up OpenGL and also Texture Compression I believe.

Charts/RNC/CG-01 is .97gb. Before this was quick and effective under OpenGL with texture compression cache =ON. Now it is slow and not worth using Opengl=ON and Texture Cache=OFF because OpenGL=OFF is more effective and faster.

Sorry, but there were no errors or call stacks when I ran DEBUG mode.
I attach output file from some of that testing.

======

I am not able to manually build the Texture Cache because it is greyed out. Where do I turn it on? --back to the manual.

Re: OpenCPN Beta test 4.1.1108 Release

I am unable to do a "manual" texture compression into a cache.
I have looked at the Opencpn.ini and not found a switch and tried various things without success. I have looked at the manual and it does not show anything about the Advanced OpenGL texture cache.

Also, it occurs to me that possibly the Check box for OpenGL is reversed?

Go to Options->Display->Advanced->Options (next to OpenGL selection). There you will find a button to manually rebuild the texture cache.

Sounds like you may be running with the Windows GDI Generic OpenGL driver. This will cause Texture caching to be disabled, since this OpenGL driver is not very compatible with the standard. It is missing several functions we need, and is known to be very slow.

Have you changed your configuration lately?
Please post your logfile entries for OpenGL, and we will take a look.

Thanks

Dave...
Creating the textures on the background with the current codebase feels subjectively much slower than what I remember from the last time I actually didn't have the cache fully populated, will try to narrow it down to some commit tomorrow...

Re: OpenCPN Beta test 4.1.1108 Release

It is intended to be no slower at all with the cache than without in the worst case. That is because it initially loads the data and pushes it without compression (or smaller mipmaps) and triggers a worker thread with lower priority to complete the compression. Once complete it can swap the data out to save video memory.

Rick, maybe try reverting 64dcdf27e22517889394099f6cc6360913362f31?

Dashboard issue:
On WinXP and W10
The mouse right click view/hide check boxes are not working.
If I've two instrument panels open both are indicated in the right click menu but if I disable either of them the other panel is closed. And it's not possible to enable any of them from that menu. I've to to open preferences to enable.

Re: OpenCPN Beta test 4.1.1108 Release

Hi there,
I just discovered, that OCPN shows LAMBERT CONFORMAL CONIC charts nicely with a perfectly aligned grid (see screen shot of NOAA chart 14983). It seems that all the projection code insn't needed, at least as long as the charts have embedded polynoms.

To get the chart loaded, edit it with a hexeditor and replace LAMBERT CONFORMAL CONIC with MERCATOR and blanks...
