Re: OpenCPN Beta test 4.1.1108 Release

Hi Dave, I have been playing with 1022 and have just downloaded 1108 to check if the same occurs and it does.

OpenGL - ON
1. makes GE.Kap charts go blank, it also "now" makes CM93.2 go blank (expect for chart items and soundings??). Ver 4.0.0.0 is fine with CM93.
2. prevents OCPN from closing, screen is hatched but remains active. If you then go into tools and switch OPENGL off you can close normally.

OpenGL - OFF
1. Impossible to use Radar Overlay plugin.
2. GE.Kap charts appear to now work OK.

In Ver 4.0.0.0 it was possible to render CM93 with OpenGL on and therefore run Radar overlay. In .1108 it is not possible to run the Radar plugin as no charts are visible with OpenGL on.

This is Win8.1 with Intel 945GE internal graphics. It seems to be a failing of the intel graphics and I believe also applies to 965 series boards. I know that Intel drivers are a bit (a lot) flakey for these boards but there are many itx and netbooks out there that run them.

As a temporary fix would it be possible to remove the requirement for OPENGL in the Radar plugin. Sure it will run slower but at least it will enable Radar overlays.

Cheers Peter

Re: OpenCPN Beta test 4.1.1108 Release

Problems with .kap charts and CM93-2 with Intel graphics OpenGL ON have already been reported for 4.1.1022.

They are not in Dave's list of changes and as expected are still there! Dell laptop with W10 and Intel 965 graphics.

Re: OpenCPN Beta test 4.1.1108 Release

Hi,

I found problem when I moving up a map by using mouse left button (only up, down is OK).
I observe this behavior only in OpenGL mode OFF and only in full-screen mode (F11).
When I back to normal window be pressing F11 again problem disappears.

Please see screenshot,

None of that is present with Windows7 Ultimate. All is OK.
Thanks Dave.

Re: OpenCPN Beta test 4.1.1108 Release

Hoolie...

I see from the log that the OpenGL driver detected on your system is the "GDI Generic" driver.

Code:
17:30:43: OpenGL-> Renderer String: GDI Generic
This driver would not give any hardware acceleration, I think. It is a software emulation of OpenGL.

Is this the default driver loaded when you install W10 on your device?
Have you tried any OpenGL driver updates?

I will research some more on this....

Re: OpenCPN Beta test 4.1.1108 Release

hoolie. et al...

A little more information.

The GDI Generic driver for OpenGL cannot support .KAP charts in OpenCPN.
This is true in OCPN V4.0.0, and also in the current 4.1.x Betas.

However, I find that the GDI Generic driver works OK for cm93 and vector ENCs in O4 under XP, but not in O4.1.x. So this is a legitimate regression, and I will investigate further.

But anyway, there must be a better hardware-capable driver for the Intel chipsets under W10 than GDI Generic. This one will never give raster chart support, AFAICT. So for all practical purposes, it is not compatible with OCPN, or vice-versa.

More research....

For reference, what is the display resolution of your monitor?

Thanks

Re: OpenCPN Beta test 4.1.1108 Release

I'm sure this is a W10 problem as W7 worked fine. When the "upgrade to W10" prompt came up last May/June my laptop was deemed ineligible because of the lack of graphics drivers. Shortly afterwards it was eligible.

From what you're saying I surmise they found the GDI generic driver just to push the upgrade through, even though performance is cr@p.

Thanks for your work on this, I'll search for better drivers. Maybe the W7 drivers would work though I haven't really noticed any performance improvement even on W7 with OpenGL so maybe the drivers have always been rubbish

Hoolie...

Do you recall what drivers were used on W7 for this machine?

I read a lot of Google hits regarding W10 Intel OpenGL drivers. You are not alone...
