GPS wont talk to OpenCPN

I have OpenCPN 4.2 installed with relevant charts, I have a BU353-S4 intsalled and functioning perfectly producing data. My problem is that with OpenCPN open and chart up plus gps on and functioning I am not getting an icon or data transmission to my charts. I have checked my devise manager and I am using the correct comport and it tells me the driver is fully funstional . Any help greatly appreciated

Hmm .... What is your operating system? Windows, Linux, Mac?
If it's windows, this is Windows XP SP3, vista, 7, 8.1 or 10?

You test it carried out on the boat or in your home? If it's in the house, put the GPS out of the house.

When you open the display NMEA sentences, you are getting?

The speed connection in OpenCPN it is set to 38400 bit?

Re: GPS wont talk to OpenCPN

Standard GPS for boating would be 4800 baud and 38400 for AIS.

We other question is if any other application is running at the same time using the GPS - one and only one application can access a COM port.

Does the COM port appear in the drop down list of the ports?
When you open the NMEA debug window, do you see anything?

Re: GPS wont talk to OpenCPN

Matching open cpn to the correct com port is a bit of trial and error. I downloaded a gps test application and used that to detect the port and test that the puck was working. I then used the identified port to connect open cpn to the puck. A years ago now and can't remember details.

Re: GPS wont talk to OpenCPN

dlynn, perhaps provide a screenshot of your Connection settings, or write them? bcn has some good pointers.

I would say that if you drop down the Com Port settings if the Com port you think is being used is not showing, there is a problem. Maybe start over. It should be quite simple. Sometimes shutting down and rebooting then inserting GPS into the same port.
(This is critical because you can create multiple USB entries on your computer, which are overlapping. I had to clean them out once because I was sloppy. I always label which devices use which USB port, particularly with multiple USB devices. The USB system is good, but by being sloppy about port use you can create issues.)

Please write what your problem was once you figure it out.

Reference to the manual is often helpful.
