What are you saying by flying a pirate flag, that you wish you were murdering thief?

Nobody ever said there was. Except maybe, Spain, England, France and the other costal nations of Europe, who commissioned such people to raid and attack the vessels of other nations. And paid them for such things to boot.

Pirates booty comes from his cut of the spoils.

Agreed. The biggest murdering thieves of this time period were the royal families of europe. The pirates were just people who got tired of working for somebody else and set off on their own. In a time of slavery and mass warfare, pirates were fairly tame. Some people have respect for the society of the brethren because it was spontaneous and often fairly democratic or even socialist by modern world standards. In America pirate crews often included freed slaves. The later pirates who lived like that really just wanted to live free and on the sea and did whatever they had to to make it happen. I would think most cruisers would understand or have some sympathy.
The earlier pirates, who were almost all privateers, such as Drake and Morgan, were the ones who really gave pirates a bad name. And they were considered heroes at home and worked directly for their governments. Morgan was made Governor of Jamaica. Those guys were very unpleasant. Look up "woolding" to understand what they did to their victims...

The same goes for any religion, political organization, group etc... You're piling a whole slew of things into one category of "pirates". It's exactly like saying all political parties are the same, or all religions are the same. There's completely different "pirate" ideals here and they're all being regarded as the same thing.
