Re: Do you worry about Pirates?

No, I dont worry about pirates because you can prepare against. I worry about corrupt Coast Guards. On March 4, 2018, I was attacked by IN CG commandos, there was no way I could defend myself, no way I could send a distress signal, because it would go to the same people. We were robbed, tortured and imprisoned for 2 weeks. They stole everything on the boat, cash, optics, electronics, even clothes and TVs. I was in international waters, 50 miles off Goa. I saw the cost guards ships, I knew they were ghosting us, but I thought it was normal in the area for monitoring pirates. There were not, they were hunting us.
There is nothing worse than corrupt government officials. They put a gun on my face, ordered me to close my eyes or they would kill me. Had I moved a finger they would have shot me on the spot. Those thugs used their position and their equipment to attack a US flag yacht in international waters. it was an unprecedented military-style attack. The only reason I am alive it is because I was able to send a video on my satellite system. It was put on youtube and within hours it made the world news. I will never sail again near India. Ever

I couldn't agree more.

I have often had the same concerns. Good question!

It is smart to worry. When you are anchored in a bay in a third world country you represent a source of obvious wealth and are visible to everyone on shore, many of whom are poor and desperate. What is surprising is how rarely we are actually attached. In 30 years of cruising, world wide, we have never been robbed or boarded by anyone with ill-intent or suffered any kind of harm.

We acknowledge the danger, we have lost friends and acquaintances to piracy, but the odds are on our side, so we go, and we take the chance.

On another point, we don't think piracy or pirates are a joke. The dress-up pirate idiots flying the Jolly Roger who think pirates are cute, are brainless.

On a bigger ship but I've been boarded by pirates in Rio de Janeiro harbour.
Armed but not too unfriendly.

Pirates?
Avoiding them is really easy. Just don't ever go to a boatyard where they insist on doing all the work.

Re: Do you worry about Pirates?

The only story I have personally have ever herd of pirates was in St. Lucia a couple said they were robbed by pirates off the coast of Venezuela .
They took all their money and jewelery . But than again they seamed like they were the type to make up the story to get a hand out at the marina in Rodney Bay . We all pulled together for them to help them out even though the story seamed a bit strange. Either way they needed the help.

Re: Do you worry about Pirates?

I'm back up in the NE/Boston area where the pirates want $60+ for a mooring. They say it's because they are only operating 1/2 year, but their sister marina in Buzzard Bay only wants $30

Well, that cinches it. 'Pirates' defined by that almighty alpowerful Unified Nations bunch.

Wait. If they are so omnipotent, why do we still have pirates?

Nope. I don't worry about pirates.

Pirates worry about me.

I have to be careful of my partner Jill. She is a dangerous pirate when she is pissed off.

YES!

Thank you! You make the perfect point... how many cases of piracy along the coasts of fUSA?

Anytime during the last three centuries? [ fingers tapping in echoing silence ]

Pirates along the coasts of fUSA is not a worry for boaters.

Again, thank you for including this obvious parallel.
