Can't believe someone brought up **instant** , howls indeed !

And if the crew couldn't get rice daily, no way I could go cruising 8-)

Ziplocs are a great invention. . .

French press simply doesn't make sense to me. Maybe I'm stupid. I don't get it.
When cruising w my wife we dont normally do passages of more than a few days (I now only do longer passages as crew/captain for others). For this we have a big stainless thermos. Load it up w coffee and its good for quite a few watches...cuts way down on clean up and coffee making underway.

To me cleaning up a french press is pretty easy, but everyone has their own preference. Certainly an Areopress or similar is the ultimate in easy clean up.

I knew the coffee snobs would howl, but how practical is a french press coffee maker in a seaway? Great when tied up in a marina or on anchor, but try playing with one when the boat is pitching and rolling. Likewise, I don't cook with rice underway. I try to cook "difficult" meals before we get underway.

Of course, if one never leaves the dock, these problems don't arise.

Take your flowers off the transom and go to sea;>)

My perspective is its pretty easy...a shot of water to saturate the grounds, swirl, dump overboard (or in the sink if its really snotty out, but on a cat thats less of an issue...so you need a cat to go w your french press! ; ) ) then a spritz of water to rinse inside the press body and screen. Done.

Most cruisers spend the majority of their time at anchor punctuated by short passages so less of an issue typically. If voyaging (mostly crossing oceans) is more your style then other methods may be better suited than a french press.

French press is pretty easy to use even while sailing. You just heat up water in a whistle kettle and pour the water in the French press. You can keep the French press in the sink wedged between pots & pans, etc. Never had a problem and I really like coffee.

You must not want good coffee bad enough. Wedge your stainless press in the sink. We grind fresh beans every day too

We have 2 of the 32oz Espro stainless steel French press coffee makers. We have company often and it is nice to have one pot and another one hot sand ready. They are fabulous for keeping the coffee hot. I’m lazy and don’t use paper filers in between the 2 mesh ones, but no one has complained yet!

Re: French Press coffee pot recommendation

We use a Thermos brand French press. It’s cheap enough but durable enough for a boat that if it takes a tumble while sailing it may be ok and if not, oh well, buy 2 to have on hand.
Highly recommend!

Thanks Weavis, the Clever Dipper is my next coffee purchase..

Re the garbage issue.
I am the only permanent crew that likes brewed coffee, so I am looking at 7 filters a week.

If I cannot get the brown ones
I think I'll try storing them on deck in a plastic vented container to dry out after dumping the grounds.

On remote beaches we often burn our paper and plastic garbage at a campfire after cooking if no option to take to a town disposal....

Tongue firmly in cheek: Just drink tea!!!

Or if you want a press that won't break if you drop it, and isn't so tall and skinny you have to wedge it in the sink to use it, try the GSI Personal Javapress.

Is there a more robust make out there for the small single mug size?
My one cup a day of French Roast in the morning, is an addiction!
Chorreador, makes a great cup and extremely durable, used by cafeteros in the coffee growing regions of the world for good reason.

Buen provecho

There is actually a cousin of the Clever Dripper designed just for that (the ingenuiTEA). Works good.
