Re: The Bitter End??
I haven't done much whipping - well a bit - but I mostly cut and melt halyards and such.
I wrap a piece of double braid tightly in about four or five turns of masking tape, then cut thru the tape and the line with a very sharp knife. This gives you a clean cut. Then I heat the cut end quickly with one of those tiny torches, and as mentioned above, quickly mold the end with wet fingers. Once the tape is removed, you have a nicely sealed end with no scorching on the jacket.
For longevity, I think whipping with thru stitches after a nicely sealed cut like this is a nice idea, and makes for a nice finish. Don't forget you can buy whipping twine in various colours for added effect.
When I do whip rope, I find putting the rope in a vice helpful, I can get the whipping really tight that way - one hand to hold the end, one hand to hold the twine.

I'm going to go home tonight and practice whipping lines and blowing my bosun pipe so as to not be mistaken for a checkbook sailor.

That's the spirit: put time and effort into it, instead of throwing money at it. Comes natural for the Dutch
ciao!
Nick.

Re: The Bitter End??
There is one more method that I forgot to mention in my first post, and that is Plasti Dip. >>> Plasti Dip Protective Coating Products | Plasti Dip Protective Coating Products | Rubber Dip Coating
After burning the ends one can dip the ends in the liquid for a sealed end, kind of like shrink wrap but smooth/no edges.
I have a short line that I use for dropping a bucket in the water, for whatever. The ends have had the Plasti Dip on them for years but the line has about frayed out by now, but the ends are still good. I plan to do most of my other lines once they are replaced. Another line, I tied a regular knot in the end and dipped it and the knot has held up for years, also.
I even used some of it to coat the bad spots on the bottom of my inflatable, after prep'ing it first. It kept the small leaks out for a couple years but after beaching it.............

Re: The Bitter End??
Here's the duct tape treatment of the bitter end. The way the line is laid to the cleat is another sign of the checkbook sailor
It can go much worse than that, just look at this one and how the splice was done:
Look how the blue line is cleated... backwards!
ciao!
Nick.

Also completely untrue. You don't start out knowing how to do it, and I experienced sailors whose names would be recognized here who just don't always have time to do it because they're busy doing other boat things. These are people who do all their own work on their boats -- one reason they don't always have time.
Comments like that make beginners, and those who have to hire some things out because they don't know everything in the world, or have every possible skill in the world yet, feel a little unwelcome ...
