Funny things you see at sea

These photos are interesting and unusual things on our passage from Cocoa Fl to St. Augustine yesterday. One photo is a capsized catamaran off Canaveral where two sailors were rescued off the hull and we encountered it on route, and the other is a Falcon 9 launch from canaveral delivering Starlink low orbit satellites with my starlink antenna in the foreground. This was all in one day (yesterday)

Hi, Flying Tigress,

Your title has been edited by the site team.

Did you report the catamaran's position to the CG? Sometimes they like to keep track of its drift.

Ann

Are capsized catamarans really that unusual?

Re: Funny things you see at sea

Funny (or maybe sad) things I've seen at sea:

A washing machine. You wouldn't think those things would float, but there it was. Probably had styrofoam shipping baffles in it.

Half a kayak. The RCC up that way refers to them as "sea coffins", so go figure.

Dead goat. Maybe a sheep. It was upside down. Four legs sticking straight up. A little morbid, but strangely amusing.

This was a real mystery until it got close enough to identify.

This one was a 18-19' ish Hobie style hot rod. I think they got it out a bit too far at sea and were sailing a bit aggressive. Their PLB worked and they were picked up and the catamaran abandoned

Re: Funny things you see at sea

This happened on our first trip with AIS on the boat.

100 miles offshore in the Gulf of Mexico, midnight to 3:00 AM watch our AIS showed an RV.

Wife took over watch at 3:00 and I mentioned an RV off to our port stern.

WHAT???

Yup, RV= Research Vessel not Recreational Vehicle.

Re: Funny things you see at sea

I was enroute to Bermuda, about 150 miles offshore, towards sunset, when out of the blue, an owl, yes an owl, tried to land on the transom of my boat.
It circled around a few times, looking for a place to land, but it was clearly exhausted and could not make it and landed in the water, wings spread out on the ocean near the stern of my boat.
We fished it out of the water and deposited it on the transom, where it took refuge behind some gear we had laying there.
It was not interested in any food or water we laid out near it.

How it got to be so far offshore we had no idea.
Sometime during the night, it took off again and that was the last we saw of it.

Re: Funny things you see at sea

1. Dead cow floating on its back
2. A consortium of miniature octopuses that flew over the boat, hit the cabin wall and fell into the boat (the cleaning process was not easy... )
3. A large flock of small birds that came to rest on the boat during a storm near Cyprus.
4. A hawk that came and caught dinner from the a.m. flock.
5. Large (maybe 2' across) luminescent creatures that appeared at night in our wake in the Atlantic.

A large semi-circular fan , at distance, in a flat calm English Channel. Both instances most unusual. Turned out to be the root ball of a huge tree.

Capsized monos are really rare unless you have bottom sonar.

We saw this in the middle of the Indian ocean.

Weird--But Funny
Sailing into a harbor in Eastern Canada, I once came across a rubber glove going out with the tide.
What made it weird was that only the fingers were visible--sticking straight up!

JUST a rubber glove some fisherman had lost overboard....no body attached. LOL
(OR the fisherman couldn't swim and sank!)

Greetings from Sicily, a floating Fiat 500, sporting stylish Ferrari red and a matching outboard.

Got to love the colour coordination.
