Re: Celebrity Sailors--Who would you have liked to Sail with

I think the use of Celebrities is improper here.

I do not think the Pardey's would agree to your definition. Bombard might dislike this take too.

Celebrities are people like the Delos.

The Pardeys, Bombard and the company are/were SAILORS.

Of the famous navigators, I would love to sail with:

- Barker,

- Riou,
- Read,
- Malinovsky,

- Bligh (after he parted ways with Bounty),
- Dampier,
- Bougainville,
- Gerbault,

Can I go on ?

He would probably analyze speed vector, velocity, drag etc too much and take the fun out of sailing 😜

Okay, here's someone so competent I drool, wishing I were so: Suzanne Cuber-Hurphey. Just Google her, first woman singlehander to do the NW Passage! Certainly one of Jim's and mine hero(ine) sailors! A true, conservative sailor, who loves the sea and sailing...and combats her fears head on, when they arise! Chapeau!

Yep, Susanne is a true inspiration for the few that know her or of her. We've had the pleasure of time with her on board her boat and ours, but never sailed together. Ann didn't mention her participation in the Longue Route event last year where she followed up her NW passage solo with 1 1/2 circumnavigations alone and unsupported, and following Bernard's lead, continued on around instead of sailing up the Atlantic to the finish in France. Eventually stopped in Tassie after sumpin' like 280 days at sea. We asked her if we could help her with her to do list... and there wasn't one! Didn't even take on fuel... just repaired her JSD and bought freshies, hung out a while and then pressed onward. Lots of adventures since then, including being on the rocks at Reunion Is and suffering huge damage to Nehaj... then sailed on to South Africa hoping to do major repair, but no go, and then onward up the Atlantic, ending up in Holland recently, returning her boat to the builder in Sneek for rehab. All without sponsership, Gofunds or any publicity.

What a sailor, what a gal, what a great person to know! I'd sail with her any day... but she prefers solo!

Jim

Not to mention there is an old physics story we all hear in undergraduate lectures.

Once, working on the Manhattan project, Oppenheimer, Einstein and Fermi, I think, were riding in a car. They got a flat and none of the most brilliant minds in physics could change the tire.

So, you’d definitely be the engineer on this sailing trip. Lol

Maybe it's endemic among brilliant minds, Chotu...

My sister has a double masters - one in Environmental Biology and the other... geez, I forget. But in other words, a brain the size of a planet!

While driving her Honda Civic and CHEWING GUM once... she drove the car off the road! (We still tease her about it.)

No more gum for La-La!

BTW I think I have seen a video of Einstein sailing a boat. So he might as well have been a decent sailor.

Have never read his biography yet though.

For me, I would like to sail with or have had the opportunity to sail with (in no specific order):

Drake Roberts
Jim & Ann Cate
Larry & Lin Pardey
Alain Bombard
Brian Keith, Buddy Ebsen, Stearling Hayden. Although these three guys were Hollywood actors, all three seemed to be down to earth people who loved to sail.

There is no question he would have understood everything about the science and he did love to sail but he simply missed on the art part. From what I’ve read he was one of the slower sailors out there. Nothing wrong with slow mind you.
