Celebrity Sailors--Who would you have liked to Sail with

If you had a chance to sail with any Celebrity / Sailors living or deceased who would you chose?

For me, I would like to sail with or have had the opportunity to sail with (in no specific order):

Drake Roberts
Jim & Ann Cate
Larry & Lin Pardey
Alain Bombard
Brian Keith, Buddy Ebsen, Stearling Hayden. Although these three guys were Hollywood actors, all three seemed to be down to earth people who loved to sail.

Got to sail on David Crosby's (Crosby, Stills & Nash) beautiful old wooden schooner once...

I think Sterling Hayden would've been a trip. Or how 'bout Mortissier...?!

LittleWing, That must have been something else. What a great opportunity. I wonder if Mr. Crosby is still sailing.

Both Moitessier and Hayden seem to be very genuine. If you have a chance google Alain Gerbault, He was also quite a sailor.

Yeah - very laid back guy - a ponderous old pig of a huge wooden schooner, though - out of Port Townsend, WA, which has since been sold. Don't know if he still sails...

I forgot Tracey Edwards! (of Maiden - the women's Whitbread round-the-world entry) Got to try out for her record-setting round-the-world attempt, but didn't make the team - which was probably a good thing, as they were dismasted off South America (near Cape Horn, if I remember correctly) and the attempt was made in Peter Blake's 75' catamaran. It did go exceptionally fast - 25-30 knots slaloming through boats in the Solent - talk about an experience! - but it was a catamaran. As I'd raced them in Austalia, I grew to loathe them. Glad I wasn't on it.

But the opportunity of sailing with Tracey other than one day's trial would've been cool.

Did Gerbault write any books?

I’ll go with these guys because it looks like the most outlandish sailing available.

Either that or these guys:

Despite the fact that I’m a quiet hermit type on my own boats, if I’m going to go sailing with other people, I’m going to do it right. Ha ha

Chotu!

That America's Cup boat is just obscene. You guys and your speed-demoning! Sheesh!

The point of sailing is not to go fast! The point of sailing is to go sloooow!

Moving deliberately through the world. Like that guy at Walden Pond. Who was he? Oh yeah, like THOREAU...

Like that!

p.s. Are you in Maine yet, ya Scurvy Dog, you?

Just to demonstrate how unreliable memory is, I think it was actually Neil Young.

(I was only crewing for the day as a favour for a friend.)

I remember talking to him only twice the entire day. You know, the whole speak-only-when-spoken-to when on a famous person's private yacht.

First - at the beginning of the day, regarding the sails' hoist (all done by hand with multiple people because the damn things were so huge and hauling mechanics were so ancient) and second - when he suggested I go below to have a look at the hand-carved saloon table, which I remember as being absolutely incredible.

No, nothing untoward went on! He was a perfect (although scraggy) gentleman. Get your minds out of the gutter!
