Re: Young People Cruising

It has been my experience regarding life that a person makes a choice and does it.

As a 16 year old, I went to school, worked 3 jobs to get enough money to purchase a fishing Dory. An event happened where I had to spend some of the money on something else, so I settled for a good condition used one with a faulty outboard.

I knew I would have to keep working to make money to sort out the outboard.

One day, I had the engine in the shed in pieces, and was seeing what I had to replace. My father came in and sat with me for a while just watching. He grunted and then got up and went out.

The next day, after school, I went into the shed, and all my parts and engine was gone. I was confused. I went out to the boat and on the transom was a brand new 40 horse. There was a note on it.

"Son. I didnt help at all. I wanted to see how you would turn out as a person. Im impressed and very proud. A gift from your mother and me.
PS... dont expect a birthday present this year...."

My dad was old school. But for those of us that had the same..... dads taught us self reliance and the value of work. He was fond of saying " You get nothing for now't.."
