Re: Is Texas a good place to cruise/liveaboard?

Thanks for all the responses. I have my 101 scheduled for June and will try to do a combined 103/104 at the coast later this summer. Seems like a good way to get my feet wet

One question I had was related to insurance. Would I expect to have problems due to hurricane season getting insurance? Or is that more of a Florida / Caribbean type thing. Hearing horror stories

Re: Is Texas a good place to cruise/liveaboard?

To each their own, here is my opinion after living there for 30years, and having two sailboats for 13yrs of them in Texas...

* No way... I was there 13years with my boat and could not wait to get out...

* Poor marine service providers in comparison to the East coast

* Being on the hard is 5x more expensive for longer term yard work

* The plethora of sailors and sailing chandleries was shocking here in Florida. Specially marine shops who do not charge an arm and a leg like they do in Texas. Why is this? Because we are a BOATING STATE-- the demand is more common, and the requests are not "specialty" bull$hit like the shops in Kemah, Galveston would like for you to believe.

* Sailboat Riggers --- a lot of great people on the east coast skilled in their trade for 60% of the prices they charge in Texas.

* Haul out facilities are plentiful and sprinkled all down the Florida east coastline -- should you have the need for an emergency haul out, and or regular maintnence.

Just a few things to think about-- most of my sailings friends or acquaintances never really went sailing outside of the Galveston Jetties-- therefore people experiences sailing was bay sailing only, beer can races, or icicle Races in winter -- again ON THE BAY. Not the same experiences or depth of sailors on east coast who sail offshore on a monthly basis... Blue water experience...

Again-- only my personal experience and opinion... To each their own....

And to add to the last post, it is getting harder to find a liveaboard marina in SE Texas. Most have a moratorium on new and as each of the grandfathered liveaboards leave eventually there will be none around here. Corpus still has some, but very pricey and strict.

FYI, an exemplary marina agreement with specific clauses associated with liveaboards, including limitation of the number allowed in the marina.

Re: Is Texas a good place to cruise/liveaboard?

PLenty of places to be a liveaboard exist in Texas. Corpus may be an exception. If you come up the coast to Galveston/Clear Lake, there are dozens of marinas where you can live on your boat. Some restrictions apply such as minimum size etc.

Based on my extensive research throughout TX, FL and the US east coast - Texas by far has the most and the lowest costs for liveaboards.
