Tip Out Trash Can Latch?

Hi,

I'm rebuilding a galley and want to add a hidden tip out trash can. I've got the hinge sorted out, but the latch end is a bit befuddling.

Anyone have some pictures of hardware that what works and doesn't open up in rough weather?

A bungee cord attached to the inside will work, no latch, bungee pulls it closed. My boat came that way from the factory.
While it's cute, we don't use ours as it's just simply too small, so if you build one, build kitchen trashcan sized, not Hotel room trashcan sized.

Slick way to go with the bungee cord!

Kitchen size is what I'm shooting for, 13x16 and 24 tall so both the kitchen size trash can, and trash bags will fit inside the cabinet, rather than building a one off box...

An oblong piece of teak maybe 3" x .75 " on the outside cab face with a screw in the center. Just turn it to hold the cabinet shut. Works fine. :>) Or you can install a "thru the hole" cabinet latch. I've done both. I kinda like the simple "turn the piece of wood" thingy. Easy peasy reliable KISS. Remember as you tip the unit out, the garbage can lip moves vertical... leave room for it!

I have a bunch of the "stick your finger through the hole to work the latch" kind. Have to be very careful in a sea way. Dang near broke a finger more than once.

YES! Especially when down low rather than at chest level.


Here's the rotating latch I was talking about earlier. Although for trash I like a tip out door hinged at the bottom.

I have a profound disregard/disrespect for every single trash can that requires two hands to dump trash.

At home I have to open the door under the sink. At my in-laws, they even have covers on top of the cans inside the same doors!!! I need three hands there!!!

On our boat I stuck an open can under the nav station. I can drop stuff into it from the galley and saloon, no extra hands required. Unless it's more than 75% full I never see the trash because of the visual angles from where one sits or stands on our boat.

Our Mark II boats had trash cans designed into the galley countertops which required lifitng the covers. Glad I bought a Mark I.

Best ones I've seen are the angled lids where you simply push and drop stuff in, like some way old trash cans in institutional use. A friend of mine's wife bought one for their kitchen, worked great.

Ours has a barrel bolt latch, the same as the tops of all the drop lockers. It is still a one hand to open, one hand to toss in the *stuff*, deal. However it is athwartships facing aft, and there is plenty of room to brace with your legs, or can be opened from within the galley "U".

FWIW, our tip out trash bin door has a simple barrel bolt to latch it closed, but is organized so that gravity holds it closed in normal usage. That is, the weight of the bin and its contents, being offset from the hinge axis, holds it closed. Pretty simple!

Yeah, anchored 90% of the time, leave it unlatched. sailing ....latch it.

Does that mean the hinge is mounted on the face of the cabinet, above the bottom of the trash can a few inches? I like the idea of hinging it so it is naturally closed. I had been planning to mount the hinges inboard, but that may be in error if gravity won't keep it closed.

Does the attached sketch describe how yours is built?

I have found with the hinge flush on front at the bottom, the weight of the garbage container keeps it shut, except in rough weather possibly. Mine were always under the sink, so you often have little room/depth to deal with due to sink hoses etc.

That is the way mine is it's when it's empty that it can open up when we are rolling, but the bungee will keep it closed then

Yes. Stay away from those things - they'll break your fingers if you are thrown while trying to open the door.

Hinges on the bottom of the bin and a wooden turn-button to hold the door closed in a seaway. Wood doesn't rust or tarnish :-)

Or as we do - an open plastic bin under the companionway steps, the plastic bag in it being removed once or twice a day to live in the lazarette until we come to the next marina.
