Quantity anti-foul paint for 36' mono?

Hi all,
I've got a 36' mono that I'd like to slap a couple of coats of anti-foul paint on. This is a first for me - I've never had to do this. The bottom is in great shape (5 coats interprotech and 3 coats Micron 66 two summers ago), but it probably wouldn't hurt to do a couple fresh coats while she's on the hard.

I got a quote from the yard and they anticipate 4 gallons of Micron 66 to do the 2 coats plus $11/foot for labor. Total - ~$1820

That seems really high. The labor isn't that bad, but the amount of paint is way more than I would have expected. Thoughts?

We can get one gallon to do one coat on our C34. Fin keel.

I have a Cascade 36 that I used 2 gallons on this summer.
29' waterline, 5.5' fin keel with a bulb, spade rudder.

I got 2 coats and a little extra on the waterline and front of keel. I also raised the level of bottom paint about 3-4 inches. I had an inch of paint left in the can for the bottom of the keel and the pad spots when we splashed.

4 Gallons seems excessive.

I'd bet a coffee and donut (not more!) that each coat will require 1 1/4 gallons.. That's what my boat with a 27.5 foot waterline takes.

Are you putting on two coats of the same colour? If so, the yard has to buy 3 gallon cans of paint. Or are you putting on two coats of different colours (the bottom coat is called a signal coat, the top one a topcoat)? In that case the yard would tell you that they have to buy 2 gallon cans of paint for each coat, total 4 gallons.

For a bottom job on my boat, applying two coats of paint of different colouts, I budget $1600US.

Pro yard manager here. Your bottom should be 1.5 gal per coat for Micron. They are sticking you for an extra gallon. That's also well over $300 a gallon for 66. Find a new yard. Or DIY.

I got 3 coats out of 2 gallons for my Niagara 35 (fairly short waterline, but long keel).

No idea. I did two coats and had some left. So i did a third. I think I was putting it on heavy. Maybe not. Maybe my 3 coats was like other's 2

With Micron 66?

Obviously not all paints have the same coverage. With Hydrocoat you could easily do two coats in one gallon. But it's awful paint.

Alternatively, you could put Coppercoat on your hull and forget about slapping antifouling paint on ever again. We have it on our two boats, and will never antifoul again. Supposed to last 10+ year, but I hear of many who get 15+ from it. Have a look at www.coppercoat.com if you are interested.

A picture alone doesn't really tell much. For a start it doesn't look like Coppercoat, and secondly, you do have to pull a boat out and give it a scrub every year.. How long has that one sat in the water?

Re: Quantity anti-foul paint for 36' mono?

Look- as I've said a dozen times here and elsewhere; CopperCoat may work very well in some locales, but here in the Bay Area (where the OP is, BTW), it is an ineffective anti fouling coating. The OP certainly may choose to take the advice of CopperCoat users on the other side of the planet, but if he takes the advice of this local hull cleaning professional, he'll give the product a wide berth.
