buy a Dometic stove again.

We have a Dometic two burner with oven - the narrow model.

It is the worst piece of gear I have bought for our boat in last 5 years or so.

It is only 4 years old and it is falling apart. 2 / 3 flame sensor have failed. And it has apparently no insulation at all (if I were to judge by how it burns the sides of the stove well). The knobs and handles get too hot to operate. It has pan holders in all the wrong places an these fall out at random too. Etc etc etc.

There is this bad word that refers to defecation and this word precisely describes our Dometic stove.

German quality HA HA HA.

End of rant,
Cheers,
b.

I think you are confusing the Origo with some other model because mine has no sensors. But cool rant anyway.

Re: Origo Stoves have been discontinued??

A few places still have new origo stoves in stock, as it appears they were discontinued late last year. However, nearly all mention of them has disappeared from the Dometic web site, and those pages that do mention Origo stove products of any kind say "No longer in production." See, for example, this:

https://www.dometic.com/en-us/us/sup...gimbal-_-20501

I found one facebook page from a seller that specifically states the 3000 was discontinued:

https://www.facebook.com/amdrocamper...5862514395222/

Dometic appears to have dropped the Origo stoves very quietly. I made the OP here because I was wondering if anyone had heard more. That some retailers are still selling parts or the stoves appears to be evidence of residual stock. Defender marine, for example, appears to be having a blow-out sale on the remaining parts they have for the stoves. I was wondering if anyone know what the exact relationship between Dometic and Origo was? In particular, did Dometic own Origo or was there some sort of license or distribution agreement with another company?

As per OP:

" ...I wanted to replace the propane stove top in my boat, and I recently found a good deal on a used Origo 3000 stove. I was actually considering buying a new one. However, it appears that Dometic has discontinued the entire line of Origo stoves! I find this strange as I know they enjoy great popularity among many boaters.

Does anyone know why Dometic discontinued these stoves? Will someone else make/distribute them?

..."

Red and bold mine. Hence my outburst.

I was not even aware Dometic made Origo.

The legal requirements for "denaturing" alcohol (i.e. rendering it toxic so that it is no longer regulated and taxed as beverage alcohol) vary from one country to the next.

In some countries, notably England, the only denatured alcohol that is available burns with a stink.

Out of curiosity, in a squeeze, could you run the Origos on high alcohol liquer, like vodka?
Despite the high prize that is...

However, now it looks like ORIGO is once again available in Canada: https://www.marineoutfitters.ca/inde...=7392991001085

Whatever its called...great stove!
Is the Cookmate also stainless?

Ordinary vodka isn't strong enough to burn well. Might work for a while but with repeated use the water will accumulate in the burner while the alcohol burns and you end up with a waterlogged burner that won't light. Things like rum leave a residue in the burner, sugar I would guess, not a clean burn.

If you're in a jurisdiction where beverage grade 190 proof alcohol is available, that will work great but costs $20 a liter. It's available in around 30 states in the USA. It is usually sold under the brand "Everclear," although 151 proof (75.5%) Everclear is also sold and will not work reliably in stoves.

Everclear is hard to find even in the states that permit its sale. I've never seen it for sale outside the USA.

I've read that the Cookmate is also no longer in production, and it certainly appears less available than the Origo stoves. The pictures I've seen of them make them appear nearly identical to the Origo stoves. This description claims stainless construction:

https://www.sears.com/contoure-appli...-SPM7399579422

However, they were made in China, so YMMV on the grade of stainless used.

Re: Origo Stoves have been discontinued??

I asked a Dometic representative on a boat show in January. He told me that Dometic stopped producing Origo stoves because some safety regulations became stricter.

Re: Origo Stoves have been discontinued??

We have used one for the last 12 years and it has served us well. We purchase our denatured alcohol at ACE hardware in 5gal containers. Big savings over one gal containers.

That sounds a bit like a corporate answer,
I suspect that any new safety regulations would be easily accommodated, but as I stated previously, there is no continuous profit in producing any item that lasts for forty plus years, with virtually no maintenance. More profit for profits sake is the motto of all corporations.

Fair winds,
