Diesel Demand Water Heater

Have searched with no current results. Is there a stand alone diesel hot water heater anywhere? Already have Espar heat, just want morning shower. Does it exist? Had a Paloma on previous boat and it was wonderful! Need an insureable diesel option.

I assume this means no such product exists?

Search for oil water heaters. There are many, tankless, tanked etc.

Webasto makes a small unit that burns diesel and it’s used to keep warm the engines of semi trucks so they don’t have to run their engines at night in cold weather. A typical semi cooling system holds around 10 gallons of coolant. I think it possible to install one of these units on your boat and use it to heat the water in a 5-10 gallon tank for showers.

This looks like a well designed high quality unit & at $1,880 it's priced like boat stuff. Some feedback from actual users would be interesting. Another option is a Honda 2000. Top up your batteries in the morning while you're running your electric water heater.

Whatever you choose make sure your insurance agent will sign off on it.

Is it Espar hydronic or air? If it's hydronic, you've already got it. For instant hot water, a plate type heat exchanger will do it. Or use a calorifier.

If it's air, then you will need to add a hydronic unit for hot water. You can add some radiators as a bonus.

Re: Diesel Demand Water Heater

Espar is air. Last boat had a Paloma propane demand heater and it was pure luxury. Hot shower anytime. Seeking diesel alternatives has been challenging. In a wet climate, forced air systems are the driest heat, hydronic will make hot water but not dry the boat. Looking for demand hot water for under $1k. Do not wish to replace a functional heating system for big $ just for shower!

Re: Diesel Demand Water Heater

Current thinking is to replace my 30 yr old electric/heat exchange water tank with new, hopefully more efficient tank. Last time we used the engine purely for hot water production, it took 45 minutes! Perhaps a new tank will work better?

The ITR on-demand diesel heater mentioned above fits in about the space of a hot water tank.

No insurance company will approve a Paloma.
