However! Seems like painting before storage would lock in any moisture, which seems bad, and allow for damage to be done to the paint during storage by the supports and transport equipment.

In addition to all the stuff the smart people have said before me

depends on the paint you use, but I would say before launch, I would check with the manufacturer

The best time is the time closest to returning to the water. Most antifouling by its very nature wants to degrade (even on land) with time. There are a few non ablatives that are hard shell and don't degrade as readily but there is a hung jury on the effectiveness of most in salt water. If you are going in fresh water, you really don't even need anti fouling. Just make sure to power wash the hull when you pull it.

Before launch.

The alternative is Coppercoat - it's as happy out of the water for 10 years or more, as it is in. One of the reasons we went for it, as when we can, we haul at the end of each season, and I didn't want the issue of the regular stuff drying out, egg-shell cracking, and then starting to flake off, giving me a real mess to sort out - been there, done that.

This is our seventh season now with Coppercoat, and very pleased with it.

Re: Antifouling before or after storage

The basic issue is that the active ingredients in most copper based (and similar) paints oxidize when exposed to air and lose their effectiveness. Therefore launching as soon as the paint is dry is usually advised.
Like the wise man said - read the container or check the web site.

For regular paints, agree. for Coppercoat you want those oxides

Re: Antifouling before or after storage

Usually I remove loose bottom paint a week or so prior to launch just because painting always seems to be the last job to complete here in the Northeast (Long Island Sound) of the USA. Have to admit to spot painting acouple of years with the majority of the bottom with paint a full year old with no additional growth over the sailing season from May to October. Always using ablative paint.

The principal active ingredient in most copper based anti fouling paint is copper oxide. Don't think oxidation whilst in storage is gonna do much to that compound!

But to reiterate several other posts: ablative paints will survive air storage for considerable periods. Hard anti fouling paints mostly will not. None the less, painting just before launch will assure you that physical abuse will not degrade paint, and is the best practice.

Re: Antifouling before or after storage

I would like to add to the foregoing, that a thorough cleansing of the hull prior to storage, but when everything is still wet, will make life easier. It is a lot more work to remove dried, set up, bio-fouling, than it is when wet. And you don't want to paint over it, because the new paint will fall off of it, leaving bare chunks behind, which then foul quickly.

Re: Antifouling before or after storage

I recently spoke with the Pettit Paint Company factory rep who agrees with many of the above comments that a multiseason ablative paint like their Ultima SR-60 can be painted at any time prior to dry storage and will not be affected by the elements before a later launch date.
