Let's hope the mechanic hasn't purloined any of the remaining good bits.

Re: different motors

Though Perth seems almost the antipodes of Detroit, if Transperth happened to use AMG or GMC transit buses, that may be a good place to start if you need to locate used parts or experienced machine shop services for Detroits. AMG was bought by Renault, don't know if any Detroit engines made it into Renault buses.

Not Transperth itself, but vendors who serviced it...

"Get hold on your old engines, pull them apart, hunt down the parts, find a good machine shop in Perth (there were several really good ones around that I knew of a decade ago) and get cracking!"

Wow, Wotname, that's a worst case scenario. Test them first!

Re: different motors

I've rebuilt Detroits that were flooded with salt water. The rust you get is just a surface film that usually doesn't change the size or cam lobes. You take the engines apart, pressure wash, buff the machine surfaces, mic everything, and buy an engine kit. Have the head and injectors rebuilt by a specialty shop.
In the US DDs are being replaced in trucks and dirt cheap. Another option would be to buy 2 used good running truck 8-71 naturals and put your marine gear on them. Basically the same engines with different injectors. Have your injectors rebuilt. Also there are some Chinese companies that make Detroit (and other) injectors. Might be cheaper than an engine kit.

Re: different motors

You guys are confirming why I bought a US Navy surplus DD 4-53 in year 2000 for $4,200. You have not mentioned that they are SMOOTH. No vibration. Parts everywhere. Cheap. Run on just about any petroleum product. Reputed to run on buttermilk, but I have not tried it. Heavy - mine is 1,100 pounds with the tranny for 140 HP.

They are smooth because they are two strokes

Haha, I suggest you review post #9...

Let me make it easy for you; here it is (with my emphasis).

They have now been stripped, well pistons were still in sleeves when I last saw it, with one crank being pitted and one cam, when motors went under, 32v went to weakest point to earth and that was a cam bearing - which has now fused onto the block.
