Re: Modernizing a Prout Elite 37ft

Probably the original snowgoose hulls were the one you're referring to. The Elite hulls I would guess have done quite a bit less voyaging and are greatly compromised as the step aft is nearly always submerged or close to submerged. No doubt if you want a decent cat on the cheap the Prout Classic is a solid choice, if you want a custom/ self built/ finished boat?? I personally like the 33' quest without the elite step hull. Have only seen a few; one in a mooring field with approaching decent bridge deck clearance.

given that I was not really looking for a catamaran to start with, and i already own and live on a 63 ft aluminium expedition type performance cruiser, that we have circumnavigated once with, I think I might mention my motivation for buying the vessel.

# 1,i like building boats, this is my sixth.

# 2, I had a spare 60 foot of alongside dockspace with plumbed in power, water and broadband.

#3,it was really really cheap!,and comprised the brand new hull and deck, rudders, windows, plans etc
also a brand new 33hp engine, brand new self tailing winches, and anchor windlass, wharps, steering etc.

#4 I currently have a mast and enough new 8mm wire to rig it as well as halyards, ground tackle etc and currently spent less than $15 k

#5 i've still got sails, batteries and a few hatches to buy but the total cost should come in at under 25k total for the complete brand new go anywhere vessel................even if only at 6 knots, which actually is not that slow and also have a motoring range of about 1500 miles @ about $30-40 a day fuel costs, with the ability to get into shallow lagoons, and dry out on the beach.

that is what I call a performance cat, please point out any similar Brand New production GRP 37 ft catamaran available for us $25k that can do that

Well Atoll, you didn't have to defend or explain anything at all really. The pretentious Boatguy's of the world -- I wanted to jump in and stop that nonsense but I couldn't find my computer screen because my eyes wouldn't stop rolling.

Your best argument by far was your first:

and I think that was more than enough reason.

I still need a bath.

You'll be lucky to make 6 knots under sail with fuel to motor 1500 miles. 37' cats are not expedition boats or not in the sense you are apparently used to. Keep up the good work and the accounting tricks.

I think you missed the point, which was that the cat has the "Ability" to sail at 6 knots easily in trade wind conditions or motor easily 1500 miles in light/no wind conditions carrying a moderate amount of extra fuel.

not sure what you mean by accounting tricks, but if I had spent my time in the pub instead I would be way over 25 k by now with nothing to show for it

I don't get the inspiration for a vessel snub... I currently own 4 boats.... I am jealous of this one and more importantly the expertise of the refit... ***shakes head***

Re: Modernizing a Prout Elite 37ft

Not sure I would be dissing someone else's project if I had such a fugly boat, regardless of performance. A bit boxy to begin with and only made worse with a really discordant mix of fixed ports and opening hatches. Not very consistent with the designer's original intent.

I don't think boatguy is actually dissing my project, more the production model built by the factory when prout was in business.

unfortunately on this particular model the factory opted for heavy interior grp mouldings throughout, on the factory finished version which made them very heavy, floating about 4 inches below the designed waterline from new.

I however don't have this problem as the mouldings are no longer available to the home builder, and am using the the plans for the earlier lighter model that used only plywood for the interior, with a weight saving of about 600 kg.
