That Horstman looks like a very good deal for $5000.

Re: Cheap Multis and Projects
Pretty sure the yellow (and later blue) one for $2K in Victoria BC is a 37' Jim Brown Searunner.
Maybe oine of the Searunner crowd could comment?

Is that a Horstman alias? It seems perhaps a knockoff of a Horstman. I notice that no photos of the interior or cockpit are provided, no info on materials of the corpus, etc. Having seen a few Horstman trimarans (though not a 35 ft. model), I can say it may have a family resemblance in a similar manner to the several Searunner knockoffs I have seen over the years.

Homebuilt Triair 369 is what the ad says. Did Horstman design a triair? Doesn\t he call his designs the tristar? His website says nothing about a triair. Probably someone obtained a copy of his plans.
Then its funny that there are no pics of the interior or the cockpit. Lists 20 hours on engine. i guess a fully functional boat is worth $5k with no interior. Dunno, but i for one don't wanna work on a boat that much.

Re: Cheap Multis and Projects
It looks like a Hortsman's inspired design. To me the Tristar 35 has more streamlined lines.

Re: Cheap Multis and Projects
I did not notice that the guy was also claiming to be the designer. I have actually sailed on a tristar (not a triair) 35 that a friend built many years ago. I agree that there are differences like the leading edge of the connectives but it is too close to just be "inspired". Why would you bother? My guess is that the guy started with a set of Tristar plans and with owner/builder "improvements" ended up with this. I think it mentions "Livaboard ready" and a couple of refrigerators so I think its reasonable to assume it has an interior so I still think it MAY be a good deal for $5k for someone.

Re: Cheap Multis and Projects
I agree, built with Horstman plans. Diagonal ply hulls most likely. Too close to be "inspired" or a "knockoff" - look at the tristar 36 not the 35. Look at the main hull including bump out above waterline, underwing stringers, daggerboard locations, (and hull shapes etc). The model "triair 369" is too close to "tri-star 36" to be a coincidence... sometimes non-"enthusiast" owners don't get all the details right. Could be a good liveaboard.. More photos of interior & cockpit/rear cabin or someone checking the boat out in person could confirm if any major modifications or changes from the plans were made, but I see no reason to suspect or speculate about any.

Re: Cheap Multis and Projects
When making changes to a designers plans, common courtesy dictates that you do not use the original name so that if and when things go wrong, it will not be put down as a failure of a Horstman Tristar. My suggestion would be that it is a knockoff built from Ed's plans, but with enough variation that either the builder was respectful enough not to call it a tristar, or Ed Horstman requested that he not call it that...... Some designers are far more sensitive about that than others. I'm not at all put off about the naming........ it says something about the builder.......
Answers are to be had merely by replying to the add and initiating a conversation with the builder........ I would suggest that someone who might be seriously interested do just that, and report back.
H.W.

Cleaned up the basic design might have some merit for simple warm weather cruising.
What I can't believe is that they want $18,000 in it's current state. Be lucky to get $5k I think. But I'm guessing $2-3k to 'get rid of it'.
