Cheap Multis and Projects
I thought it would be fun to show some of the affordable cats, tris and project boats for sale. Maybe one of these is worthwhile. I'll start.
Home Built 40 Foot Catamaran For Sale
Only $8000.

And the Prout 34 for $34,000. That's only 1000 bucks a foot. Can't beat it.

Re: Cheap multis and projects
There was a 50' cat in San Diego a couple of weeks ago for only $10,000. It was an unfinished homebuilt and afloat but no rig. I think the owner/builder passed away. That may have been a good one. I can't find it now.

When I saw this thread (which, btw, is a brilliant idea!), I was going to post a photo of that thing you mentioned; just for humor purposes. It was hideous.
They reduced the price to $5K, which was also outrageous, and now it seems they've probably made themselves a helluva nice bonfire on Imperial Beach.

Re: Cheap Multis and Projects
Not sure where it went but the multi used in Kevin Costner's, Waterworld, sat on an end tie on Harbor Island for at least 10 years and slowly deteriorated into junk. Never left the dock and I heard she was finally towed out and sunk past SD #1 somewhere.
I know she was listed by some broker but never got a nibble. Capt Phil

Re: Cheap Multis and Projects
There are a few Brown Searunners down in Mexico that seem to be a lot of boat for the money. Being what they are, they're not spacious like a catamaran, but could be very seaworthy vessels and a cheap way to get into extensive cruising. I'm pretty sure one of the owners is on this forum. I can't remember if he's the one with the Dyneema rigging, which I think is a nice idea to keep the weight aloft down.

Re: Cheap Multis and Projects
Pretty to easy to beat an old Prout with just about anything with sails!
The main reason I chose to build my boat is that the cost will be less than $1000 per foot based on my personal circumstances and I figure less overall work and more rewarding than refitting a 30 y/o boat.
Cheers,
Jeff

Re: Cheap Multis and Projects
I could be wrong but believe the tri in San Diego on Harbor Island was the real vessel used in the movie, WaterWorld. Sure hope someone didn't try and sail her to Florida because she was in bad shape the last time I saw her. Also the 'Black Pearl' used in Pirates of the Caribbean was tied up at the CruisePort dock for some time in Ensenada, MX along with the bark used in the Master and Commander movie with Russell Crowe. Northern Mexico has been home to a number of movie sets and memorable vessels.
We berthed behind the Black Pearl a few years ago and had a chance to go aboard. Very interesting with the rail system below decks to run cameras back and forth. Capt Phil
