The hull configuration does not look like a cruising cat, any idea on the make?
Sympathies go out to the lost crew member's family.

It’s a Marsaudon Ts5

More of a performance cat. Lightweight and fast.

Yes, the same TS5 won the arc with an average speed of 12.5 kts. A very fast cruiser.

Reportedly it had the second reef in 16-18kt TWS. Very experienced crew. The hull is intact.

The area is exactly where killer whales have been attacking sailboats: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/extra/buq...spain-portugal

Thread already started about this. The Orca angle is a new input - plausible UFO.

That thread devolved in the usual retarded mono vs multihull bs long ago.

Re: 15M Catamaran Capsize off Portugal

Here's a press release from Marsaudon (from their facebook):

Quote:
Marsaudon Composites Press Release

We sadly learned of the capsizing of "Hallucine", the ORC 50 catamaran of our friend Régis Guillemot, which occurred off the coast of Vigo (Spain), while travelling to the Antilles.

The catamaran hit an OFNI. Of the four people on board, a team mate passed away. He was a close to Marsaudon Composites, a regular of the construction site. All our thoughts are with his family and loved ones. All our thoughts are also with Regis and the other two team mates in the test they are experiencing right now.

Mentions carbon debris but it doesn't look like a container would have caused it and left the appendages, rudders, board, sail-drives in tack. Could it have been a breaching orca?

Anyone have a professional subscription to MarineTraffic that would show the past track just prior to the incident.

Unfortunate that it happened on Friday 13th.

For those like me who were not familiar with the term

OFNI = Objet Flottant Non-Identifié

aka Unidentified Floating Object

There appears to be a lot of OFNI/UFO incidents. The Vendee page has an article about it and what would seem like some good tech help (OSCAR and Wave Shield). Unfortunately, the price of OSCAR seemed to be about 30 k€, so quite a bit.

A tragic event, this TS5/ORC50 capsize, with the loss of life. I think it will have repercussions for all (performance) catamaran sailing.

That's a translation from a local Finnish newspaper. They get the wind speed wrong, it was kt, not m/s, but maybe some new bits of info.

Re: 15M Catamaran Capsize off Portugal

If the map shows the place where the incident ocurred, then:

It isn't off of Portugal, more like Spain. Specifically, Costa da Morte as it is called in Galicia - the region of Spain.
Coast of Death because of the many shipwrecks. It is rumored that in centuries pasts the locals would mess with the landmarks (specially at night) and cause many of those wrecks to salvage the spoils.

I’m not sure why you think this event is so special that it will affect all performance cruising catamarans?

They hit something (possibly) in reasonable conditions and capsized. What’s there to learn?

Certainly the loss of life is significant, and provides a reason for wearing a PFD and/or harness and tether in easy conditions.
