Urgent. Help with name
We are in escrow for a 41 foot sailboat. We don't like the present name so are changing it and the CG is asking for the documents/info.
We cannot come to an agreement and because we often think about what a boats name might say about it's owners, I'm throwing out the 3 main candidates to see how they might strike another sailor passing by our transom as a way of breaking the deadlock.
In no order:
Rachel June. I like it because it's feminine and a little tradional. It's my daughter's name and she is named after her maternal grandmother and my mother.
The Dreaming II. We named our first boat, a 23 footer when we were in our 20's The Dreaming. It's taken from the Kate Bush song that is about the aussie aborignal creation myth, The Dream Time.
Starwood78. Simply where and when we met when I was 20 and she was 16.
I've also considered Minerva, my favorite of the feminine deities that embodies strength, wisdom and kindness but the admiral has rejected it.
Please Help with your thoughts. I have only a few hours to work this out.
TIA Kurt

Re: Urgent. Help with name
I vote for Starwood78. It’s memorable and a whole lot easier to say over the radio.

I like it, too, but without the number. Either someone will think it's your birthday (which makes you younger, right?) or by looking at you will figure out it's something else.
I just dislike cutesy names or people's names, but that's just me. But any boat that starts with "the" is plain wrong, to me.

Re: Urgent. Help with name
All three names are good ones, but I vote for Rachel June, which sounds like a boat name. Starwood78 is a nice name but is in the form of a boat model with name and length. The Dreaming II to me suggests a smaller sailboat or a power boat. All entirely subjective, of course, but since you ask ...

No, thank you. Exactly the input I asked for. You've named the same reason I like Rachel June.

Re: Urgent. Help with name
I would suggest just using an abbreviated “Star” as your name. It simplifies trying to identify yourself over the radio, especially during an emergency.

Re: Urgent. Help with name
I always liked the name "Jeanne Goree" (my moms name) but it seemed more apropriate for a tug boat so Rachel June gets my vote!

Re: Urgent. Help with name
No klunkers in the list, all work.
First Place: Rachel June. The only downside is that (to me) it sounds like a commercial fishing boat name. In the USA that is how the majority of the fishing fleet is named, with two women's names. But if it's your daughter's mother's and grandmother's name, you have rights!
Second Place: Starwood Skip the number.
Third choice: Dreaming. I'd skip the article. It makes talking about your boat a bit awkward, and a lot of people a just going to know you as "dreaming" so just stay there. The only downside to this one is that it is pretty common.

Re: Urgent. Help with name
I'll also vote for Rachel June. And I second ItDepends recommendation that Starwood (without the number) would be a pretty good name as well.

Re: Urgent. Help with name
Whatever your choice-spell it out loud several times using the radio phonetic alphabet & see how it sounds & how long it takes to spell it (in an emerg)
Cheers/Len

I'm following the thread practically in real time. When we look at fonts for the potential names, Starwood alone doesn't quite look right or seems to demand the article "The" and that, to me, demands the question, "What's a Starwood?
I'm loving the input and will post the final answer. As soon as it's chosen and the paperwork is in the PO will grant us access to the boat, not to take out but to organize, get familiar with the systems etc.

Re: Urgent. Help with name
It does't seem to have anyother meaning but it is a known surname in some southeastern states.
Backwards it Doowrats and I'm just enough of a punk to consider it. I like screwing with the pardigm when I'm not being a tradionalist.

Re: Urgent. Help with name
Everyone else may ask "what's a Starwood?", but that happens with plenty of good boat names. Some are obvious, some aren't until you know the story behind it.
