Aye Skipper, it's one of the first things I do when a name suggestion comes up.

Re: Urgent. Help with name

You should really think about how the name sounds when you call it out on the vhf..

cutsy names often cause a problem or are easily misunderstood over the air....or worse...in an emergency..

double barreled name might make points with the family, but tend to be long winded

finally...long names are often difficult to find a suitable location on the boat, whether on the transom or aft stern hull.

keep it short...keep it simple....is the trick....

Agreed. 1 or 2 word names are generally best for that reason. And ideally something that's fairly easy to understand without needing to spell it out.

Re: Urgent. Help with name

If I were you, I'd either name her Rachel J or your wife's first name, [if you still like her]. She probably won't object. Having a boat name that is easy for a tired radio operator to copy can be useful. Our boat name, "Insatiable", is, imo, too long for radio use, but we didn't understand about that way back when. You could look for short names, "Bob" (what she does in a lumpy sea), "Aka" (Hawaiian for "reflections"), "Ika" (Marshalese for "fish"), you get the idea.

Another paradigm is "Lady + name". Thus the "Lady Ellen".

Re: Urgent. Help with name

We have a "winner".

Starwood

Just Starwood, no "the" and no numbers. WE know what it means. It's short enough. The sylables, IMO, are distinct enough for radio use and it spells with the phonetic alphabet pretty easily.

thanks sincerely for all the input. It actually was quite helpful.

P.S. I'm not big on naming the dinghy. It's fine for those that do but it not my jam.

Re: Urgent. Help with name

I like Rachel June as I like 2 word names, and it is not hard to understand on VHF.

Second choice would be Starwood, without the number, however, not knowing it’s meaning I would think it must be some kind of exotic wood which the boat is made of.

A boat name starting with “The” sounds like a navy destroyer or aircraft carrier or something official, and dreaming/dreamer is just too common.

You have any other options? I like this game 😊

Re: Urgent. Help with name

With only a choice between those three I would, (belatedly,) go with "Starwood", without the number.
The others are too, (searching for a word,) Gauche.

Here, here. A boats name is no different than a person's name. I'm not "The Jim", I'm just "Jim".

Our current boat was "Lady Dianne" when we got it. My wife's take on that was "I'm not Dianne, and I'm no lady". We changed it.

Re: Urgent. Help with name

My vote would be to channel Starwood into SW and explain the abbreviation to make radio calls easier.

Sierra Whisky, Sierra Whisky calling any nearby vessel. Do you fine people happen to have any Grey Poupon?

Just call her RJ for short. When you come into port, announce that Romeo Juliet is arriving.

Re: Urgent. Help with name

my Ham call sign ends in YF....Yankee Foxtrot....for some reason....saying " Yankee Foxtrot" on the air gets immediate attention...something about those two words that are instantly recognizable...even if two or more stations are trying to get on the same frequency...Yankee Foxtrot has the ability to cut thru' the clutter and stand above...
A boat name should likewise be instantly recognizable.....Starwood has a good ring to it..

This one is easy - "Stardust"

It's what you get when you sand a little off of "Starwood".
