Part 2 - Columbia 29 refit, in the Rocky Mountains

got two coats on so far, need to do one more. Used the Total Boat Wet Edge stuff again, blue glow white. Wanted to spray it but there has been to much wind and this is the only weather window we have had in weeks. Luckily we had some very nice rollers on hand and rolled it out, not perfect but still looks good. Once this paint cures on the hull I can mount up the anchor platform.

Looking really good there when is splash day? I could use your trailer for a day or 2 .
Need to eliminate a thruhull in the head.

I really ought to consider topsides paint. That looks great

I did manage to get my new bench seats installed today. They need a little more fitting due to the lazarette cutout not quite being square.

I think I have learned enough to not try and schedule a splash day yet, I will say I'm hoping for 2022 haha! Hoping to not need the trailer and be in the water soon! Thanks

WOW, those look beautiful! Really great looking, tell you what if you end up doing topside paint I can say we have been very pleased with the total boat products and they are better price than a lot of other stuff that was more difficult for us to work with.

You should sail down here and meet at Don's place. We can have a Columbia 29 reunion and I can help you put the boat in the trailer and do the thru hulls!

Technically I don't have a columbia I have a Glas laminates defender 29
1963 and columbia was not in existence untill 1964 .

But yes that is a possibility ( the meet up ) in a couple years I have to finish my refit first . ( yes I still have to Install the engine. I am retired so I'm working to much .

Huh? Then all those brochures they printed in ‘62 are wrong????

Yes and no they had mulled around on it for a couple years but didn't officially incorporate untill 64 iirc but I have Bern known to be incorrect . But it does explain the builders plate on my defender and the one on my 66 islander bahama

Interesting, I will have to look at the plate around my tiller too. Looks similar to yours Rob, but cant remember if it states Glas-Laminates or Columbia. Guess it doesn't matter much but I'm curious now.

Well need to find the appropriate saw blade (higher teeth count) to cut the laminate I will use for the new counter tops. Rough cut to be close to the finished size and the finished cuts will be done with a flush cut router bit I found for cutting laminate. Cant wait to get the new sink installed and plumbed.

Which brings me to the bad news.........While we were taking off the hose for the drain on the ice box, the entire fitting ripped right out. Will have to post pics, but now it seems I need to either fix it or rework and rethink the ice box. What do you all think, keep it and fix the drain or cut it out and complete rebuild?

Rob, I thought you might have cut yours out and rebuilt it right? I thought you re-insulated. Before I but it out or even think about it i was curious how well the factory icebox is insulated? Oh, the plastic factory liner in the icebox is starting to crack so I guess it needs attention anyway. In my crazy brain I'm thinking there might be some extra space back there to reclaim anyway.

Ok a few tricks first as to your laminate cut the basic shape with masking tape and a razor knife put the tape on the face and deep score it for the cut the tape will help stop chipping of the edge.

Sent pm about the ice box. Reinstall drain if keeping it as an ice box but no if converting.
As to " reclaiming space you are much better off to insulate the box as the insulation is minimal. Mine has Styrofoam 1/2 " shert on three sides and the bottom . The hull side has foam poster board it really sucks bad. Cryogel is not cheap but there's only 2 inches of space around 3 sides of my box and it gives me up to 5 layers of 10mm at R8.5 per 10 mm layer. Yes I will post pictures when I finally get time to do the project.
