Re: Looking for my next boat.

[QUOTE=GILow;3485166]Hi all,

So, I’m starting to consider an upgrade in the future. The Swanson 42 is a lovely boat and has treated me well, but headroom is a problem for someone of my height and I wouldn’t mind just a bit more space.

I think I’m getting a handle on my cruising style, and I’m betting it will be a lot of short coastal hops to the next nice anchorage before staying there for as long as I can.

So the wish list looks a bit like this:

45 to 50 feet.
Probably fibreglass, certainly not timber.
Centre cockpit with a decent aft cabin.
Moderately conservative hull and rig, capable of being comfortably sailed short handed or solo, cutter rigged is a bonus.
Under AU$200K.
Reasonable cruising speed, something can average 6 to 7 knots on a passage.
Enough headroom for a 6 foot bloke.
A bit of a view possible from inside the boat, not some deep, dark bucket.

Examples of what I am thinking would include the Adams 45 centre cockpit version, maybe the Ted Brewer 42 Pilot House and the Van de Stadt Tasman 48.

Now the Adams are getting old and I’m not sure I want to own a 40 year old steel boat which is a pity because otherwise it looks like a close match. The Brewer is a little small and slow and the VdS is probably outside my budget. But these three sort of describe what I think I want.

I’m not looking for a boat with a good interior, I’ve learned that I can deal with that, and frankly I don’t really like elaborate timber interiors anyway, hence the Adams aesthetic works for me. But it does have to sail well, not super fast but very sure footed like the Swanson.

So, recommendations welcomed.

Hi, Have a look at the photos of my boat in my profile. A good looking, fast sailing boat? This was built before Bavarias came up out of the water...turning, in my opinion, into marina caravans which can be moved.
Captain O’Brien is a 1995 Bavaria 44. Set up for single handed…short handed, ocean going, water sailing">blue water sailing.

The rigging was completed uprated and changed in 2002 and 2004.*This after some discussion with the Selden rigs, Swedish structural designer Anders Heuman.
All the Lewmar blocks and running gear was changed for uprated Harken equipment. A longer Harken main sheet traveller, with a large Main sheet car were fitted. A Navtec hydraulic backstay adjuster. A pair of Harken B56 electric primary winches were fitted at the same time.
(Please note, the forestay inside the Profurl foil is Dyform wire as is the Backstay. (Dyform wire is 34% stronger than standard 1x19 stainless steel rigging wire)
The backstay has insulators and special coax cable lead back to the chart table ready for an long range SSB radio.)
Many other upgrades have been made to the boat over the years of my ownership. I could send you a full list if you have interest.

Due to Covid, I have not been able use the boat, and decided to sell it to concentrate on one other on going project. It is based in the very safe marina of La Rochelle so out of any worry. Now the restrictions have been somewhat lifted. I have now been able to spend some time on Captain O’Brien. I have drawn up a list of jobs to be done. A re-fit listing, it is not a huge list, with things like haul out and antifoul and back, re-varnish the saloon floor and table below, etc. together with the costings….which if you are interested, I could send to you.
I have not previously made much effort to advertise Captain O’Brien for sale. But now I shall start to make more effort.

If I carry out the full re-fit the price would be €61000, which is in US dollars is 72000 and change. But if someone wishes to do the work themselves, we could talk about reductions to this price.

best regards
Mike

'Tubby' would be the word I would use for them.

Note in pic 1 the judicious use of the striped sheerstrake to try and make a fat Fulmar look less obese.

Pic 2 is my sleek Sealord - I see no sign of 'wedding caking'.

I shall put your comment down to age and infirmity coupled with failing eyesight.

Caleb, once again you have used the term "leafs" in a pejorative sense ( I think). For those of us less worldly than you, please explain what that term means.

I suspect that it isn't nice, but could be wrong.

Jim

Falling in love with the Robert Perry 47. I think I may have found my next boat. Now someone tell me what is wrong with it.

I’m also confused by the message here
Care to elaborate?

Ignore that one, it’s a troll, does that to lots of threads.

Well, funnily enough, might be looking for one in less good condition. I found a good one but I really don’t like the interior and neither does my GF.

It’s probably sacrilege but those Taiwanese timber interiors leave us both cold.

I’ve done one interior refit now and I feel like I could do another, so I’m probably looking for a rather tired example.

Crazy, I know.

Over the fore cabin we see quite a high start to the coachroof blending gracefully into a quasi deck saloon which in turn takes us - onwards and upwards - to the cockpit with coamings that high that a gate together with a step are required to access it comfortably from the side deck.

All that is missing is the icing on the cake - a standing headroom dodger and a bimini.
Oh... here we go --

I wonder what the freeboard is in SMCs?

Another fine piece of cake below - I once had someone identify the class - they said they were best avoided.

I’m not fond of the wedding cake thing, but my aesthetic tolerance has been softened somewhat by the crude approach to the above deck structure applied by the Swanson brothers.

Ah - I wasn't going to mention that but ......

The full standing headroom in what is essentially a flush decker isn't one of my favourites either.

No worries you would warm right up with all the maintenance involved keeping it looking nice.

I was thinking a brief and vigorous workout to remove it all.
