Looking for my next boat.

Hi all,

So, I’m starting to consider an upgrade in the future. The Swanson 42 is a lovely boat and has treated me well, but headroom is a problem for someone of my height and I wouldn’t mind just a bit more space.

I think I’m getting a handle on my cruising style, and I’m betting it will be a lot of short coastal hops to the next nice anchorage before staying there for as long as I can.

So the wish list looks a bit like this:

45 to 50 feet.
Probably fibreglass, certainly not timber.
Centre cockpit with a decent aft cabin.
Moderately conservative hull and rig, capable of being comfortably sailed short handed or solo, cutter rigged is a bonus.
Under AU$200K.
Reasonable cruising speed, something can average 6 to 7 knots on a passage.
Enough headroom for a 6 foot bloke.
A bit of a view possible from inside the boat, not some deep, dark bucket.

Examples of what I am thinking would include the Adams 45 centre cockpit version, maybe the Ted Brewer 42 Pilot House and the Van de Stadt Tasman 48.

Now the Adams are getting old and I’m not sure I want to own a 40 year old steel boat which is a pity because otherwise it looks like a close match. The Brewer is a little small and slow and the VdS is probably outside my budget. But these three sort of describe what I think I want.

I’m not looking for a boat with a good interior, I’ve learned that I can deal with that, and frankly I don’t really like elaborate timber interiors anyway, hence the Adams aesthetic works for me. But it does have to sail well, not super fast but very sure footed like the Swanson.

So, recommendations welcomed.

Matt

Re: Looking for my next boat.

We looked a Brewer 43 PH (1 of 6) in St Pete FL and it was hands down the best PH and most well organized boat I’ve ever seen. Unfortunately it was a neglected wreck, and the decks were more water than wood. So we skipped it. Iirc there’s one for sale in Trinidad

I have liked the few Brewer designs I’ve met first hand, certainly on my short list.

Gasp!

Have you told Manny about this yet? Going public prior to arriving back in Adelaide seems risky, Matt. You're braver than I, mate!

There are also Oceanlords which are 41 foot but much roomier than your 42.

You may want to check out a Kelly Peterson 44.

I saw an Oceanlord over our Dominion Day Weekend up here (July 1st) this Summer and it was one of the ugliest boats I've ever seen. Looked like a stacked wedding cake, the freeboard was so high up off of the water. Ugh.

And this is from someone who loves Westerlies - but Fulmars.

That is on a par with telling someone that their wife is fat and ugly - no - its worse - far worse..

You are aware that a Fulmar is just an Oceanlord with 9 feet aft of the helm chopped off?

'Tubby' would be the word I would use for them.

Note in pic 1 the judicious use of the striped sheerstrake to try and make a fat Fulmar look less obese.

Pic 2 is my sleek Sealord - I see no sign of 'wedding caking'.

I shall put your comment down to age and infirmity coupled with failing eyesight.

Re: Looking for my next boat.

Further comparison of the two - downstairs they are as close to identical as you could imagine except for the missing back end.

Re: Looking for my next boat.

Don't know what to tell you, Ping.

The pictures you've posted are not the boat I saw. I'm sure they said it was an Oceanlord... gawd it was ugly!

I'll see if I can find a picture of the boat, but since I probably don't have the right model, I don't know what luck I'll have trying to find a picture...

Some have their lines spoilt by over high dodgers.

Both Fulmars and Sealord/Oceanlords benefit from a nice stripe... a bit like vertical stripes an a fat person's clothes.

Re: Looking for my next boat.

Found it.

It was a Sealord. Look at how bloated it looks. Plus, I can assure you, standing at the dock, the freeboard on that boat was appalling. Ugh.

Okay - enough hijacking. Now back to Matt's boat search!
