Re: Boats Less Than $30K Recent Noteworthy Finds

1975 Endurance 35

A little, local ad here in Kingston Ontario Canada. Not much info, but a ton of boat for the money...$18,000 cdn (about $13,000 usd). In the current market, it could sell for much less.

35 ft. ENDURANCE | sailboats | Kingston | Kijiji

A quick google indicates that these are heavily built, full keel boats with pilot house and modest draft (5 feet). They are known to be safe, but slow.

Here is the text from the ad (not much to go on):
35 FT SAILBOAT. new furler, propane stove heater[Dickenson] new cushions, micro wave, anchor chain , windlass, knotmeter, lazy jack system, cradle, ferro cement hull,[great shape], open to offers, needs a bit of work,,great for liveaboard or just use as a cottage...

Steady's Notes:
This model of boat has been recommended by some of the most experienced members of CF. See the archived threads for anecdotes and descriptions of the boat's sailing qualities.

NOTE: All of the photos in this profile are from a single boat (the one listed for sale via the link below).

From my research notes on this boat design (I did not write the following text):

The Yankee 30 was produced from 1971-1975 by Yankee Yachts, during which time 132 of these boats were constructed. As a consequence of the oil crisis and rising cost of fiberglass resins in the mid-1970s and John Shumaker’s refusal to reduce the quality of his boats, Yankee Yachts ceased production in 1975.

The Yankee 30 is a beautiful sailboat, designed by Sparkman & Stephens (S&S design No. 1999) and originally built by Yankee Yachts in Santa Ana, California. The yacht is well suited to both racing and cruising, with a tall keel-stepped mast and high aspect sail plan to improve light airs performance, high ballast to displacement ratio to make them stiff and dry to weather, and a bustle and skeg-mounted rudder for ideal handling off the wind. Unlike highly engineered racing boats, the Yankee 30 is somewhat overbuilt. As a result she’s a very sturdy boat. Stability and an easy motion, whether sailing short-handed or with a crew make the Yankee 30 an ideal boat off-shore passages.

Yeah and if it checks out sound, and you are in So Cal, it ain't so hard to bring her down the coast in the summer. 30 foot slips available in my neighborhood. I have no interest in the boat except I'd like to see more island cruising neighbors! I might be talked into helping you bring her down too!

SOLD for $3,000 usd. Now to wait and see if it gets relisted (non paying bidder)...it happens a lot on ebay, and especially with boats.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Sailboat-Wat...c=1&rmvSB=true

I should mention from the text that the owner passed away, and it is being sold by the family. A very sad situation. My condolences to the family.

I bought an estate boat once, and I always felt the presence of the previous owner, and thought of him often. Especially after I found his old pants and his log book, both of which I returned to the family.

Checking the bidding history, it was pumped up from $1100 to $2000 by a bidder with a feedback of 1. This always gets my attention and sends mixed signals.

Here's hoping she finds a good home.

"Steel. Gotta be steel"
for certain people seems to be the most important criterion.

So because it photos really nice, and is under our price point, even tho the designer isn't listed and the info is limited, here's a steel cutter rigged 32 footer, built 1999. Unf. the broker doesn't list designer, just that it's owner built. Looks like a pretty nice job, tho.

Check that wheel? This is a metal head's boat!

Skookum 34

________________

Steady's Notes

1. I like pilothouse boats and if I lived in the PNW I would want one. This is a pilot house boat with inside helm position. This boat looks like a very nice pilothouse boat for use in the Pacific Northwest. I like the apparent visibility from the inside helm position.

2. The Skookum brand of boats is well known in the PNW.

3. From the photos on the ad, this one appears to be in excellent condition. I like everything I see in it. If I were living in Seattle or Portland or Vancouver, or San Francisco now, this boat would be high on my short list to consider.

4. Has a Diesel heater and 16 mile RADAR.

5. full keel with cutaway forefoot,

Sunbird 32 Junk Rig

___________

Steady's Notes

1. I have always had a fascination with Junk Rig boats and boats with Free Standing Masts. I like them and whenever I see one, it catches my eye. This one looks like it has been cared for nicely, and rather than having to start with a "project boat" this one appears ready to go. For a sailor looking for a Junk Rigged boat, this one appears to have a lot to offer.

2. This boat looks like it has been kept in very good condition. I particularly like this layout for a cruising couple. It has a midship double berth (Pullman) and a nicely finished wood interior. The Vberth has been used for storage, something I would do too.

3. Note that this boat has a reconditioned BUKH engine with ZERO HOURS that was installed in late 2016.

3. There is much more information found via the ad link in the details on the ad, including electronics etc. I am going to post just some of that information here to give an idea of the boat.

4. I counted 6 Dorade or cowl vents on deck with a few more vents too. I like that, as good ventilation keeps a boat nice. It also has a cabin heater in the saloon.

Re: Boats Less Than $30K Recent Noteworthy Finds

Trident Voyager 35 Raised Salon (Deck Saloon)

Steady's Notes

1. I am including this boat because of the many times I have seen CF members ask about boats that have "lots of light" in the saloon, and for boats that don't have a "cave like" saloon. This boat fits that need, with a Deck Saloon design that features large deadlights (windows) that allow a lot of light inside. While some sailors will say this type of design (with large glass) is intended for coastal sailing conditions, the ad does say it sailed from the UK to the USA. It can be done. I would affix some kind of storm covers prior to an ocean crossing, but for typical coastal condition sailing, this looks like a nice boat where one can enjoy the view from the galley, dinette or settee.

2. This boat was built in the UK. This is the first one I have seen listed in the USA. It is located in Massachusetts.

Here is a quote from the ad:
Angus Primrose designed sloop with a raised coach roof salon. She was built in England and sailed to the U.S. She has a Mercedes 4 cylinder OM636 engine, heat and air conditioning, ICom VHF M603 and SSB IC728. Also, a Sailor VHF, model RT 144AB, electric windlass, hot and cold pressure water and an electric head.

As with any boat, it is smart to have a qualified yacht surveyor perform a survey of the boat to assess its condition.

I hope this thread proves helpful to CF Members. If so, let me know, as it is nice to know the time spent on it has helped others.
IF you purchase this boat, let me know (a PM would be OK).
IF you purchase this boat, I would enjoy seeing it, or going for a sail on it, if I am ever in your area. Or, if you own a similar or sister boat send me a PM. I enjoy sailing on a wide variety of boats and would like to get some time on many designs, including this one.
Good luck on your own boat hunt.
