I can't speak for chrisr, but I think Sea Shepherds throwing acid in the faces of Japanese fishermen is too aggressive an act; just like ramming the ship. It is the behavior that if it were aimed at me, and I survived, I would sue. Both are aggravated assaults, blatantly illegal, and real harm is done by them.

So, while we are very interested in the condition of the seas, we are also interested in non-violent protest, over violent, and of legal behavior by ships to other boats.

Butyric acid, rotten butter acid. Not friendly but not sulfuric acid. I concede we may have opposing viewpoints. I would be more inclined to see the Japanese whalers as bad guys who refuse to stop killing whales under bogus pretenses who need a bit of shock therapy. So with respect I see the Sea Shepherds as the good guys who are in no way equatable to nazis.

The japanese were intercepted and their hunting disrupted because they were killing whales inside the designated Whale Sanctuary in the southern ocean. That is the only place Sea Shepherd interfered with them.

And yes, merely rotten butter. In return the japanese rammed and sank a SeaShepherd vessel that was idling while waiting for a refuel.

Pirate legacy, at least during the Golden Age was one of a proto democratic state in rebellion against monarchy-- hereditary rulers fond of enslavement, rape and brutality. The Republic of Pirates is an excellent and reasonable sourced account if you want to find out what really happened. The legacy is complex.

Butyric acid is so harmless here is part of its MSDS:

Combustible liquid
Causes severe skin burns and eye damage
Harmful to aquatic life with long lasting effects.

FWIW I agree that the Japanese should stop their farcical “research” that requires killing whales but totally disagree with the Sea Shepherd approach.
