Is there a senior (70+) cruising sailor forum?

I’m only 64 but the thing I find most important as years go by is how to avoid injuries and illness and how to deal with them without help close by. When I was younger and more limber and quick I am sure I dodged a lot of bullets… not so sure now. Sure we need to be sure we don’t lose any meds we may need and watch certain dietary issues, but if you can look around the boat and see ANYTHING that may cause injury, just figure it will, until it is dealt with. Like, are there any sharp edges to fall on inside or outside? (Why do I always manage to fall on those?)

The first time I met Reg he was walking along the, 5 feet above the deck, boom on his 50 odd foot ferrocement sailboat, holding on to a halyard for balance.
He was complaining that he didn't get out sailing much those days because his kids wouldn't come and crew, I sympathised.
It wasn't until later that I understood why, Reg was in his 90's and the kids in their 70's.!

Im 84 and fixing up my 10th boat-a Benny 41S5. However i am not planning singlehanding any oceans. congrats. I do reccomend a Milwaulkee 1/2 right angle drill with a wincher bit.

do not want to be surrounded by "old People"

My plan was moving into a "care facility" and chase the nurses to pinch their b..ts, but then "politically correct" came in, and now that behavior is frowned on!!! I guess.

What is the first thing to add to a sailing boat for our generation? IMHO it is to change the port halyard winch to electric. That then does most of the hard work onboard.

Sailing should be a pleasure , not hard work, as indeed is exemplified by the passage from Wind in the Willows. A pity Daveid (#81) only quoted the first sentence since i think the whole narrative by Rat on that occasion is absolute magic to describe the ownership of a boat and what you might do, or not do, with it.

Port secondary winch - agree. Ours is electric (the only one - I like winching, and it's good exercise). Great for getting up the mast, hauling the tender on deck, and handling the in-mast furling.
