In 1985, I bought a Van de Stadt designed steel 31 foot sloop in Rhodos, Greece. It had a long fin keel, skeg mounted rudder and was very seaworthy if not particularly fast. I sailed and cruised extensively in the Med. I also worked on other boats and in boatyards, raced some, did a bunch of deliveries, worked as a charter boat crew, charter skipper, yada, yada, yada. Eventually I sailed that boat back to the US, making landfall in Newport, R.I. in 1989. From the Island of Rhodes to Rhode Island. Poetic, right? That boat was the Katapult, which is how I became Katapult Mike. For the Atlantic crossing I ran twin genoas on whisker poles and no main – basically turned it into a square rigger for the trades. It was glorious. I did some offshore passages single handed as part of that voyage, and did some interesting side trips including crewing on a couple of Whitbread Maxi’s. I did another Atlantic crossing on a Jongert 20DS. I also spent one winter season in the Caribbean, and crewed and raced a season on a J-Class America’s Cup contender from 1930, Shamrock V, out of Newport. For anyone who was sailing in the Med in the late 80’s, our tracks might have crossed. Anyone recall the Bolix Bar in Rhodos? L’Eclipse in Mallorca?

I plan to go cruising again in few years, hopefully including a circumnavigation.
