Re: Canadian boating - Great Lakes and Atlantic region

Looks like those of us on the US side of lake Ontario are truly trapped on the lake now. Can't leave via the seaway, Welland, or the NY canals. Can't cross into Canada and get out that way either.

Oh, I howled ... but in a painful sort of way . It was hilarious, but also way too real .

Re: Canadian boating - Great Lakes and Atlantic region

Today, I received this response from the New York State Canal Corporation:

Thank you for taking the time to write to the NYS Canal Corporation with your inquiry. I apologize for the delay in my response.

In an effort to do our part to flatten the curve, we halted all non-essential projects across the Canal system and throughout NYPA (our parent organization) until further notice. However, to support the Canal’s continued use as a prime recreational waterway, we are currently evaluating operational options to ensure New Yorkers will have access to the Canal system this year. We recognize that this is an extraordinarily difficult time and are sensitive to potential hardships Canal stakeholders, New Yorkers and many others, may experience. The situation with COVID-19 is ever-evolving and we are trying to adapt our plans accordingly.

I recommend signing up for our Notice to Mariners alerts and following all Canals pages on social media, all of which can be done by visiting our website.

I hope this information is helpful to you.

Warm regards,
Jackie

The parent to the NY Canal Corporation is the NY Power Authority. Basically they run power plants and transmission lines. The canal is under their authority because of the hydro stations along the canal.

Prior to being under NYPA, the Canal Corporation was under the NY Thruway Authority. At least both corporations had some thing to do with moving people and goods.

Gee, Dave, there's a critic in everyone, eh?

So not a lot of specific info, Jackie, but lovely reply. Guess - like everyone else - they're working on it.

Thanks for sharing, Montanan!

Long story short, an organization that I volunteer for had dealings with the Canal Corp under the Thruway Authority and it all went well. When the Power Authority took over, that was not the case.

Re: Canadian boating - Great Lakes and Atlantic region

Just heard from the Lewisporte Marina in Newfoundland (my current home port). They have been closed, but do plan to open "in a very RESTRICTED capacity, allowing members to utilize the facility to carry out repairs/maintenance to their boats for the upcoming season."

So there may be hope.

Cool! Yes, some stirrings are encouraging.

Perhaps send them the Boating Ontario Physical Distancing for Marina Personnel that I posted...?

Indeed. Any glimmer of hope is welcome news these days . I may suggest the Ontario document if it seems they need support, but sometimes Newfoundlanders are sensitive to information coming from the "the mainland." Probably better to let locals sort it out (as I'm sure they will).

Even with this though, the main problem I (we) have is the restriction on non-essential travel. And even if we can get to The Rock, there is a mandatory 14-day quarantine period. With the boat on the hard, this would be difficult to accomplish.

As a local official is quoted as saying:

Quote:
“For the moment, given the fact there’s a pandemic, if you come from away, you best stay away.”

What work does the boat need before it goes in the water? If it's nothing significant, could you have them launch the boat while you head over there so it's waiting and ready for quarantine on arrival?
