Shunt/Battery Monitor with NMEA 2000 Output

I'm installing a raspberryPi with an NMEA 2000 backplate adapter on it and would like to monitor the batteries if possible.

I've got an Enerdrive Elite Battery Monitor, and unless I want to backwards engineer the interface, I can't extract that information to an NMEA stream.

I'd be oh so happy if there was a shunt/battery monitor that did output the data to NMEA so I could add the battery information to my boat's data logging.

Anybody know how to do that or if a product exists?

Re: Shunt/Battery Monitor with NMEA 2000 Output

Long shot... If you happen to have a lithium battery, the tao bms has a Monitor with a CAN interface compatible with RV-C, NMEA, SMA and more standards. CAN messages can be defined to suit proprietary formats with voltage, current, temperature, SOC, SOH and other data. It also does data display/logging with a browser interface...

Unfortunately that would not work if you have lead acid batteries or would be expensive if you do not need a BMS.

Re: Shunt/Battery Monitor with NMEA 2000 Output

The Victron SmartShunt offers its data over bluetooth or "via a VE.Direct cable" to a GX device. I believe the GX software is open-source or can be installed on a Pi.

It's not NMEA 2000, but I believe a friend is getting data from his SmartShunt into a Pi.

That is great and should get you going.

Yacht devices has a N2K adapter for standard shunts.

Thanks for the info. I'll do some googling on victron -> pi connections. That yachtd product is pretty cool, but looks to be about the same cost as a new shunt and the shunt gets me into the Victron world a little. Will definitely check them all out though!

Re: Shunt/Battery Monitor with NMEA 2000 Output

Balmar is rolling out the SG230 and SG235, both are kits with a N2k certified SmartShunt included. It has not started shipping soon, but this should happen soon. If you already have a SG200 installation, the SG2-0130 part is just the SmartShunt.

Re: Shunt/Battery Monitor with NMEA 2000 Output

the older victron bvm 700 / 702 have a ve direct to nmea 2000 cable available. I have connected them to nmea 2000 to display data on a chart plotter.

for some reason victron claims the adapter cable does not work on the newer ones 712 or smart shunt etc, despite having the same ve direct connection. I have not tried with newer ones
